The boys all sat silently in the hospital room, Mason stepping back against the window and gazing outside to hide his tear soaked eyes. In the distance, he could see typical Dutch farm land. Beautiful green windmills blowing in the storm, tulips being battered against the rain drops. The break of dawn dull and lifeless as the town remained fairly still beneath him. Every single one of the boys had gathered in the room to spend some time with his love before she was taken down for a very risky, very scary surgery that no one could guarantee an outcome of. Ben sat on the bed to her side, holding her cold hand in his own tightly, Jack on the chair next to her bed with his head resting next to her arm, Phil and Luke sat at the foot of the bed, rubbing eachother's backs through sniffs, Jude held his eyes to his sleeve, watching her from the door way. And of course, her step brother. Declan couldn't face looking at the poor soul, her face pale and connected to tubes and oxygen masks, the sound of the heart monitor matching every panicked breath he took. He sat in the corner of the room, his jaw clenched as he stared at the stone cold white floor that was freezing through his joggers, his arms wrapped around his knees. No one dared to say a word in fear of losing the precious moment, no one knowing if they'd ever have her presence again. Mason couldn't keep it in anymore. His eyes remained locked outside as he felt tears aggressively falling down his cheeks, freezing to his already blushed face as they did. He held his hand to his eyes, beginning to sob uncontrollably. This only se a number of the boys off, Dec and Phil both wiping their eyes before Ben spoke with a croak to his normally deep voice.
"I can't even imagine how hard this is for you guys. Damn, sitting here with her now is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and she's not my Mrs or my sister. But lads I can promise you, if anyone's going to get through this, it's going to be our mouse," Ben sniffed, pursing his lips in a false smile as he nodded, Declan meeting his gaze but Mason still refusing to turn around.
"My mouse," the lads heard a whisper, lightening the mood slightly as Mase turned to face them eventually, his blood shot eyes still full of tears that threatened to spill.
"She loves you so much, Mase," Dec told him, standing up and wrapping his arms around his best friend, holding his hair as he rested his head on his shoulder.
Maeve could hear everything in the room. Every sniff, every whimper, every word. She could feel the warmth of someone's hand protecting hers from the cold hospital room, with the occasional drop of cold wetness to it. All she wanted was to tell the boys how much she loved them, especially the love of her life. Hearing his upset gave her so much guilt, she attempted on numerous occasions to pull herself out of the bed, but of course her limbs remained limp and her spirit frozen.
"I'm so sorry boys, but it's time we take her down to surgery now. If you could all take a seat in the waiting room, or you can go home and we'll give you a call after the procedure to update you," a friendly nurse entered the room, clearly anxious by the situation. One by one, the boys visited Maeve's bedside, kissing her on the hand, or the head, or reminding her how strong she was, before patting Masons back and heading down the corridor. Eventually, it was just the nurse, Mase and Mouse left.
"I'll give you two a minute," the nurse told him, tapping his fore arm comfortingly before leaving the room. Mason nodded with a sniff, before walking over to the bedside, taking both of her hands in his and placing long, meaningful kisses in them.
"Hey beautiful, It's just me and you now. The boys will be back to see you when you're awake, but I didn't want to leave yet. I don't want to leave at all, knowing this could be the last moment I get to spend with you. With the love of my life. God Maeve, you have no idea how lost I am at the prospect of losing you. My mind just keeps flipping back to that first night we met, whilst I was playing fifa. How I tried to get in there straight away by helping you carry the drinks, as if you weren't capable of getting them yourself," he sniggered through tears at the memory. "And then at camp, that's where I asked you to be my girlfriend. I've got a lot of achievements from my career, winning the champions league, super cup, club World Cup, but not a single one comes close to the feeling of joy I felt when you said yes. And even better, when you said yes to being my wife! That night was so perfect, wasn't it? Surrounded by family, who love you so dearly. Everyone does, baby. Every soul that has ever met you adores the ground you walk on, but I promise you that no one does even nearly as much as I do, my gorgeous girl,"
"I'm sorry to interfere, Mr Mount, but we really need to get her down to the operating theatre now," the nurse entered the room again, sympathetically dropping her eyebrows at him, guiltiness riddling her knowing he was going to have to leave her side.
"I promise I'll be done in just one second, I just need to give her one last kiss," he sniffed, gulping away any further sadness he was trying to contain and knowing he needed to be strong for her. The nurse nodded, leaving the room once more.
"I guess I better go so you can go and get better. Just please, please come back to me after. Just think, so soon it can be just me, and you, and him. Just one more obstacle, baby. I believe in you. I love you so much," his tears dripped as he held her knuckles to his lips, his eyes firmly shut.
"Mase," he heard a whisper, but knew it was just his imagination thinking wishfully. He shook his head, his eyes pursed tight.
"Mason," he heard a slightly louder voice this time, one that seemed far too real to be in his head. He opened his eyes, looking up to meet her somewhat open ones.
"Baby? Oh my god," he sobbed uncontrollably, pulling her head into his chest as his tears fell down into her hair.
"I love you too, Mason," she felt the strength to say, attempting to lift her arms to wrap around him, but not quite feeling the energy yet.
"And I promise you, I will be coming straight back to you."
