A Bad Time for Goodbye

It was later in the afternoon when Bucky received a phone call from Sam. He left the bedroom where Ava was sleeping to answer the phone.

"Hey, Sam, what's going on?" Bucky said as a greeting.

"Hey, Buck, how is Ava holding up today?" Bucky had called Sam to fill in on what happened while Ava was making a statement at the police station. He had asked Sam to do a background check on Kyle. He had a feeling Ava wasn't the first person to be hurt by Kyle.

"She is doing good, she is strong, doesn't let anything get her down. She's already planning to go back to work tomorrow night." Bucky wasn't happy with her decision but knew he couldn't tell her what to do. "What did you find, Sam?"

"Buck, this guy is serial predator! He has been accused of sexual assault in five different states, only problem is the witnesses decide not to testify and the charges get dropped. The police can't decide if he is threatening the victims or if they are too traumatized to appear in court."

"Dammit, Sam, I knew there was something off about that guy. I don't think Ava will refuse to testify because she is afraid of him, but the chance of someone finding out about her past might give her pause." Bucky blew out a frustrated breath.

"I spoke to Fury. He says the background SHIELD gave Ava is solid, and she won't have to worry about anyone finding out who she is. I'm more worried that Kyle will try to come after her. And to make matters worse, they need us for a mission. Fury wants you back tonight."

"I can't leave her, Sam," Bucky said grinding his teeth. "Is there no one else who can take this mission with you?"

"I'm sorry, man, but Fury says it's gotta be you. He has a plane waiting for you at the airport." Even though Sam knew Bucky was angry, he still smiled to see how close Bucky and Ava had become with each other. "You can go back to her when the mission is over. It should only be a few days, maybe she can stay with friends or something," he suggested.

"Fine, I'll see you in a few hours." Bucky hung up and walked back into Ava's bedroom to wake her up. He hated to tell her he was leaving, in fact, it almost broke his heart to have to leave. He walked over to the bed and shook her gently, "Doll, I need you to wake up, please," he whispered in her ear.

She rolled onto her back and smiled up at him brightly. "Hi," she whispered shyly. He bent down and kissed her deeply before pulling back.

"Sorry, Doll, but I've been called in for a mission. I need to get my bike from the bar and pack up my hotel room. I'm gonna need you to drive me to get my bike," he told her with a frown.

She sat up in the bed, "O.K., I'll get dressed and take you." She pulled the covers back and stood up only to be enveloped in a tight hug. She hugged Bucky back and giggled, "I take it that you'll miss me while you're gone," she teased.

"Ava, you have no idea! I don't want to leave, and I really don't want you to be here alone. I'd feel better if you stayed with Tommy until I get back."

She leaned back and looked up at him, "Bucky, let me get dressed, and we can talk about it in the car. I'm assuming you are in a rush."

On the ride to the bar, Bucky tried his best to convince Ava to stay with her friends while he was gone. He even went so far as to call Tommy as they were driving. They both managed to convince her to stay with Tommy and Scott on Friday after their shift at the bar, but she argued that she would be fine staying home tonight. The police promised to have patrol cars drive by her house often. She also said she would keep her phone near the bed. Bucky wasn't thrilled with this, but didn't want to argue with her before he left.

When they pulled up to his bike, he felt a weight on his chest. He was worried about her safety, but he was also worried what would happen to their relationship while he was gone. Would she come to her senses and decide he wasn't good enough for her? Would she not want to continue seeing him when he came back? It was hard to say goodbye with all this on his mind.

Ava, who was sitting in the driver seat, turned toward him. "Bucky, I am going to miss you so much," she told him with a shaky voice. "Will you call me while you're gone so I know you are alright?"

"Of course, Doll, I'll call you everyday. Will I be able to come see you when I get back?" he asked quietly as he softly caressed her cheek.

"I'll come get you if you don't," she threatened him, leaning into his hand. She unbuckled her seat belt and leaned toward him. He wrapped his hand behind her neck and pulled her in for a long slow kiss. He took his time exploring her mouth inciting moans from her until he hesitantly pulled away.

"I'll call you when I land, Ava," he promised as opened the car door, "Bye, baby girl."

"Bye, Bucky," Ava returned. She watched him climb on his bike and pull away. She found it hard to explain the ache she felt in her chest or the tears that blurred her vision. She had only known Bucky for a short time, but she already felt like he was a large part of her life. Sighing, she buckled her seat belt and drove home.
