First Kiss

Time doesn't pass swiftly when you are anticipating something, Ava thought. She wasn't sure if she was excited or nervous about Bucky waiting for her. Kyle hadn't left the office, and he never helped with clean up anyway, so there was really no reason for Bucky to wait. But something told her to let it happen.

Against her better judgement, she wanted to get to know him better. Something about him pulled her in. She wasn't sure what it was about him, but she felt safe with him. Maybe it was from the memory of the two of them at the Hydra base that started it. But after he put himself between her and Walker, and now with Kyle, there was a shift in their dynamic.

She finally finished washing the last glass and wiped down the bar top. She grabbed her bag and headed outside to meet Bucky. He was in the parking lot leaning against her car. A motorcycle was parked next to it. He was looking at his phone until he sensed her coming toward him, then he looked up and smiled at her. Her breath caught in her throat. This was a smile she hadn't seen before. She had seen the small ones he had from time to time, and the smirks when someone did or said something funny. This smile was a whole new ball game.

"Ready to go, Doll?" he asked her.

"Yeah, thanks for waiting for me. Are you sure you want to follow me home? It's late and-"

"I told you it would make me feel better, Ava," he interrupted. "I just want to make sure you are safe."

She nodded, unlocked her car, and headed towards the driver's side door. Before she could get there, Bucky opened the door for her and waited till she sat down to speak. "I'll follow behind you, be careful," he said as he closed her door. Her hands shook as she started the car.

The trip home was uneventful, and Walker wasn't lurking around her house when she arrived. She was gathering her things when Bucky opened her door again to help her out of the car.

"Such a gentleman," she teased.

"Well, I am old fashioned, you know," he teased back. "I'm old fashioned enough to walk you to your door as well," he continued as they walked toward the house.

Ava unlocked her door and awkwardly turned to face Bucky. "Thank you for all you did for me tonight."

"I didn't do anything special. I just want to make sure you are safe." He looked down and seemed to be struggling to say something. "Ava," he stammered, "could I kiss you?"

Ava's eyes widened at his request. But she felt a pull in her stomach that told her not to let this chance pass by. "Yes," she whispered to him.

Bucky took her face in both his hands and gently placed his lips onto hers. It was a soft, gentle kiss that was over way too quickly.

He pulled away from her, "I'll see you tomorrow, Doll," he said as he walked back to his bike.

Ava entered her house and fell back against the door. That was the first kiss she had experienced without being under mind control. Her lips tingled and it took her a moment to realize that she hadn't felt uncomfortable with Bucky's touch, in fact she wanted more.

Bucky thought about Ava as he rode his motorcycle back to the hotel. He was shocked that she let him kiss her. He wanted to kiss her again, but was afraid he would make her uncomfortable. He wasn't sure why she drew him in like she did.

When that asshole at the bar had touched her arm, it took all his will power not to toss him across the room. He saw her flinch at the contact and knew he had to do something. It felt good to see the fear in Kyle's eyes when he stood from the bar stool. Bucky worried that Kyle would make Ava's night difficult if he left, so he decided to stay until closing and follow Ava back to her house.

Asking to kiss her wasn't part of the plan, but for some reason he couldn't help himself. It was the first time he kissed a woman since the 1940's.
