Chapter 23: Sweet Sacrifice

 6 weeks later.

I look up after hearing the bedroom phone ring.

"Hello?" I say answering the phone.

"Summer?" I hear an elderly voice say.

"Grandma...?" I say not believing it's her.

"Yes, sweetheart it's me." she says.

It's my Mother's mother.

"Grandma, I haven't heard from you in a while." I say happily.

"I know...That's because of your scumbag father." she says with anger, "I'm calling to see how you are. God, I can't believe Marianne is gone." she adds with pain.

"Yea...I miss her." I say gently.

I sit down on my bed with my legs crossed.

"Where are you living now?" Grandma asks.

"Um, with Corey. You remember him, right?" I say.

"Oh, Corey. He's such a sweet boy. I always thought you guys were cute together." she says cheerily.

"Yea, Corey's been there for me these past months." I say.

"So, is he your boyfriend?" she asks curiously.

I chuckle and says, "Yea, grandma."

"Finally!" she exclaims.

I giggle at her enthusiasm.

"Grandma..." I say quietly.

"Yea." she responds.

"Why weren't you at her funeral?" I ask.

"I wish I could've made it. But, I have cancer, and don't really have anyone to look after me right now." she responds.

I lay down on my bed and close my eyes for a second.

"Summer, what're you going to do when you graduate?" she says, "I assume that Corey is going to college." she adds.

"Yea, he is. I don't know where I'm going to go. I don't want to stay here, and be a burden on his mother." I say.

"Well, you can come live with me. I haven't seen you in a while. I would love to see my beautiful granddaughter." she says.

"Yea, that would be great. Plus, I could help take care of you, and attend Santa Carla Community College." I say.

I don't want to think about me and Corey going different ways.

But it's bound to happen.

"That would be great... I know you're going to miss Corey." she says gently.

"Yea..." I respond.

"Okay, I'll make sure to try to make it to your graduation. You can move in on your last day of school." she says, "When is your graduation and last day of school?' she adds.

"Uh, school ends on May16th, and graduation is June 9th." I say.

"Okay, sweetheart. I'll see you on May 16th." she says.

We both say our good-byes.

I walk into Corey's room and find him on his bed listening to music; with his headphones.

He sees me and shuts the music off, and removes his headphones.

"What's wrong?" Corey asks.

I walk over to him and sit down on his bed.

"Nothing, I just wanted to tell you that when school ends...I'm going to live with my grandmother." I say.

"You don't have to leave..." Corey says gently.

"Yea, but you'll be off at UCLA. I can't be here and be a burden on your mother." I say.

Corey sits up and put an arm around me.

"You wouldn't be." he states.

"I just think it would be better." I say.

We sit there in silence for a couple of seconds.

"I think when you leave for UCLA, we should..." I drift of not wanting to say what I was about to say.

"What?" he asks.

"I think we should... breakup." I say taking a deep breath.

I look at him hesitantly and he looks back with pain.

"Why?...That's crazy." Corey says with a hint of anger.

"Corey, you'll be at UCLA and I'll be here taking classes at Santa Carla Community College. I don't want to chain you down." I say painfully.

"But, I love you!. I would never feel chained down!" Corey exclaims.

"I know but... it would make me feel better knowing; that you wouldn't have to worry about me. I want you to continue your life..." I say.

"Summer, But-" I cut him off.

"Corey, remember what you said? We'll always make our way back to each other... If it's meant to be we'll always find each other." I say reassuring him and myself, "Let's just enjoy the time we have with each other." I add.

I kiss Corey on his soft lips passionately, and he kisses me back with the same passion.

Corey breaks the kiss and says, "Then, let's make it last."

Corey kisses my neck and I moan in pleasure.

I'll miss this...
