Chapter 5: Bruises and Apologies
-Kristina-
I was working away at Applebee's. It was about 12:05 in the morning, and we were cleaning up. I get a call from Chase."Kristina, no time to explain. Meet me at the hospital as soon as you can. It's Luke. He's in bad shape," Chase said. His voice breaking.
Some people are about to die. I tell my boss about my situation and he let me go. I run straight to the hospital, which took me about ten minutes to get to. I meet Chase up by the front door.
"Where is his room?" I ask.
"He's in the ER. No one is allowed with him. Why do you think I'm out here?"
Generally, I would be pissed, but he's hurt on the inside. We both sit on the curb and I rub his back. It's the least I can do for him, given the situation.
It's strange to see a guy completely melt down like that. "How serious is his condition?"
"He was barely breathing when I found him. There was blood all over the floor. The only light on was the tv and the light shinned perfectly on him, almost making it like a horror scene."
"Damn. All I asked for was his condition."
"Sorry."
"It's ok."
"We haven't even gone out for a couple days and we are already at a hospital. I feel like this is somehow my fault."
"Don't beat yourself down over it. you had no way of knowing this would happen. I think I know who did this, well, who was involved in this."
"Who?"
"Stacy."
He growled. "That damn bitch." He punched the concrete. I immediately back up because he causes the concrete to crack.
"If it's alright with you, I'm going to stand right here."
"It's fine. I wouldn't hurt you. You mean a lot to Luke. Also, you helped me out."
"Let me see your paw." He showed me his paw. His knuckles on his right hand were bloody. "Let's go to my place and get that bandaged up."
He doesn't say anything. He follows me with his head down. Poor guy. He didn't deserve this, neither did Luke.
At my place, I bandaged his hand. It looks like he has a boxing glove on. "Does that feel better?" I get no answer. "Come on, let's head back." Again, no answer. He walks with me with his head down low. Damn, I wish I could help him there. The only thing I'm able to is get revenge for what they did to Luke. I can't help Luke get better. If I could, that would make Chase happy.
We head back to the hospital. "Any word on Luke's condition?" I ask the lady at the front desk.
"Last name?"
"Smith. Luke Smith."
"Sorry, ma'am. I have not. He's still in the emergency room. According to this, he's scheduled for surgery tomorrow."
"SURGERY?!" Chase said, shocked, "HOW THE HELL? PARDON MY LANGUAGE! I'M SORRY! BUT WHAT TYPE OF INJURIES DOES HE HAVE?!"
The doctor came out from the ER. "Well, his rib cages are broken, he has a punctured lung, broken arm, a bad concussion, it's a miracle the kid is still breathing. He really must have something to live for."
Chase blushes a deep red. Chase knew that Luke would do whatever it took for him.
"Yes sir, Doc. Luke sure does," I reply.
