This is your room

After a thirty minute car ride, Steven pulls up to a house in a peaceful neighbourhood. He takes my suitcase out of the trunk and brings it into the house. We follow him in and Jaclyn leads us upstairs. She points to a room on the left. "Topaz, this is your room."

I walk in and observe it. It's nice. A single bed with my name painted above, a dresser, a nightstand, and a small closet that will fit all the clothes I brought. I snap a quick picture of the room with my camera.

While I'm opening my suitcase, I hear Jaclyn say to Angel and Nemmy, "And this is your room." I walk outside and see her leading them into a room. I follow them in and look around. There's a bunkbed, two dressers, and one closet.

I feel something tug on my blouse. I look down and see Nemmy pulling on me. She waves me down so I squat down beside her. "Can I sleep with you tonight, Topee?" she asks.

"Of course, Nems. That's what I'm here for. I just need ask Jaclyn." She gives me a hug.

"I love you, Topee" she says, sweetly.

I hug her back and say, "I love you too, Sweets."

Then I stand up and go over to Jaclyn. "Is it okay if Nemmy sleeps with me tonight?"

"Of course. Steven is ordering a pizza for lunch. It will be here in a couple minutes. If your hungry come down when you hear the doorbell.

I nod, then go back in my room and unpack. I put the photograph I fixed up two days ago on my nightstand, hang up my dresses, fold up my other clothes and put them in the dresser, and dress in a tank top and skirt.

I glance at my aquamarine watch. 1:45. Mom and Dad are probably eating lunch now. Alone. I grab the hourglass dangling from my neck. It calms me.

I want to go home. I want this war to end. I just got home from camp, now I'm gone again. It's not fair.

My thoughts are interrupted when I hear the doorbell ring. I then bolt downstairs and join my "family" for lunch.
