chapter ten: friends.

The brown girl felt her stomach doing flips as she walked up to Elliot's locker as he placed his things inside.

"Hey, Elliot." She said, awkwardly. For some reason the girl felt like he was mad at her, well at least that's what she's been telling herself even though he fully expressed that he wasn't mad. "Lanie, hey." Elliot smiled softly as he closed the locker, looking down at the girl. "Fez told me you stopped by yesterday." She stated and he nodded. "Yeah, sorry. I asked that Lexi girl for you address..I just wanted to come clean and if I got you in trouble-I swear it wasn't my intentions." He explained and she nodded. "I didn't get in trouble, I'm pretty sure Fez and Ash actually like you because no guy would have the balls to do that, I guess...I wanted to come over here to say that I don't hate you, I'm pretty sure you've seen my text, but I never did hate you, hate is a strong word and I was only upset and had to process my feelings." Elliot nodded.

"And I also wanted to tell you that I love Socks and Babydoll, they both sound amazing and I appreciate you for opening up to me through your music." She said, Elliot just wanted to kiss her right there on the spot.

While writing his songs he couldn't stop thinking of her. He felt bad, and he knew that he fucked up. It was like his brain couldn't stop replaying the look on her face when she saw him exit the bathroom, and each day he felt more guilty, all he could do was write, and think of Melanie.

"Thank you, that means a lot." He said and Melanie cocked her head, stepping a little closer. "Are you high?" She noticed his eyelids were barely opened. "Yeah.." He looked down in embarrassment making the girl sigh as she placed both hands on the side of his face softly. "From drugs or weed?" Melanie was now worried. "Both." He admitted. "Elliot, are you okay? Do you need water or something, you look like you're about to pass out." She whispered, trying not to cause attention since student were still walking down the halls. "I just wanted-I'm so high right now." He laughed, Melanie pulled her hands away from his face. "It's not funny, how much drugs did you do?" She asked and he shrugged. "A shit ton. But I'm fine, I swear." He tried reassuring her. "Talk to me when you're not high. Go home, Elliot. I'm serious." Melanie grew worried, she was starting to think about how Rue overdosed.

"Don't be mad at me." He said and she shook her head. "I'll only be mad if you don't go home to get rest-don't do any other drugs, you're high enough." She said. "Will you still talk to me after this?" He asked. "Yes, I'll even stop by later today to see if you aren't high out of your mind like right now."

Melanie wasn't angry at Elliot, she just didn't like the fact that she finally had the guts to speak to him and he was high out of his mind. She was blaming it on bad timing, either way, she found herself walking to Elliot's house after school, hoping that he wasn't as high as he was this morning.

She listened to Socks and Babydoll on her way there, she downloaded the files onto her phone and listened to them on repeat, she genuinely loved the songs. And by time she got to his home, all her worries came back as she knocked on the door.

Within a minute the door opened revealing Elliot, he looked better than earlier. "Are you less high now?" Melanie got straight to the point. "Yeah, I am." He said and she smiled softly. "That's good. I just wanted to stop by on my way home. You kinda scared me this morning." There was definitely tension between them, they were more quiet around each other. Not because they didn't know what to say to each other, but because they had too much to say and didn't know where to begin, or how to express their feelings.

"I'm sorry, I was upset and I thought that getting high would help." He explained and her smile slightly faded. "I'm here for you, I hope you know that-even though I've been avoiding you for the past four days, I'm still here." Melanie said. She felt like jerk.

"Can you maybe come in for a second? Just to talk?" He asked, Melanie nodded. The two silently walked to Elliot's room. Nothing had changed, clothes were still everywhere around his room, it was dim since his curtains were closed.

They still sat in silence once they were on the bed, but after a while Melanie spoke up. "What did you want to talk about?" She asked as she looked at him, his hair was curly and messy, he looked as if he had just woken up. He looked cute. Melanie couldn't help but smile softly.

"I feel like I've lost everything..and it doesn't feel right with out you. Besides Rue, you were my only other friend and I've fucked everything up, I miss you being over here." Elliot said. The girl knew exactly what he was feeling. Elliot was surprised that he was actually expressing his feelings, it wasn't what he usually did, but for some reason he just couldn't stop himself from telling her everything.

"I know what you mean. I was so used to coming over here everyday, it just felt empty and boring without you." Melanie spoke quietly as she stared at the floor. "Can everything go back to normal? Can we still be friends?" Elliot asked as he finally looked towards her. "Yeah. I'd like that." She nodded. The two stayed quiet for a second. They had so much more to talk about, but they weren't. They didn't want to ruin a good moment.

"I don't want it to be awkward or forced between us. But I like you, Lanie. I'm not good with feelings and I just don't want you to feel uncomfortable." He said. "Elliot, I like you too. I don't want things to be forced either. There's so many things that I wanna say but can't get it out-or know how to put it in right words." The girl sighed.

Elliot scooted over, so that he was closer to Melanie. He grabbed her face softly, placing his other hand on the right side of her cheek. "Can I do this?" He asked and she nodded. "Yeah." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I missed you." Elliot spoke. Melanie smiled at him. "I missed you too-I'm sorry for avoiding you, it was shitty of me but-" She was cut off by his lips pressing against hers, she kissed back almost immediately. She wrapped her arms around his neck. They pulled away from the kiss shortly. The girl wanted to slap herself for giving in so easily.

What the actual fuck.

She thought as she held back her smile.

"I thought we were continuing to be friends?" Melanie said. "I know, but I couldn't help it. You kissed back though." Elliot teased, smiling softly. The girls face grew hot. "I did." She nodded. "So we like each other, but things are complicated right now..because of me," The boy started, Melanie only nodded. "And I just kissed you-which you didn't seem to mind. I think we're fucking things up even more." Elliot said.

It was true, they had just compromised to stay friends and kissed.

"We are-can we just start all over?" Melanie asked and Elliot nodded. "We're friends." Elliot stated, Melanie cleared her throat. "Yeah, we're friends. Nothing but friends." She said.

"I want us to heal first. I should've never kissed you because I keep fucking things-" Melanie cut Elliot off. "I get it, you fucked things up, you've said it enough. I just wanna forget everything that happened Friday night. And you're right, we do need to heal first before we try to rush into relationships, or whatever it is we have going on here." She said and the boy nodded.

Friends. Like before.
