chapter twenty-three: our life.
Melanie hands were sweating as she was putting her earrings on. The two weeks of rehearsal had went past faster than she could imagine. Now here she was, getting ready to go to the play with her brother. She was startled by a knock at their front door so she quickly jogged over to answer the door. Her skin ran cold to see Custer, she hadn't seen him since the day at the mall.
"Hey, Melanie." He spoke, the girl said nothing as he walked past her into the house. The brown girl had her suspicions, she still didn't trust the man. She never did to begin with.
"Yo, I'm actually a little busy. I'm gettin' ready to go out." She heard her brother's voice from the living room area. "You goin to a party? Where you goin?" Custer asked, Melanie furrowed her eyebrows as she walked next to Faye who was steaming Fez's suit top.
"Don't worry about what I'm doin', man. Worry about yourself." Fez said. "Aight. Imma just chill then." He said whilst placing something in their bush. Melanie watched in confusion, she noticed the man eyes wandered back up so she quickly looked away to Faye. Custer then walked into the living and sat down.
"Did you see that?" Melanie whispered to the blonde girl, Faye only looked back to where Custer had recently been standing.
The young girl cleared her throat as she made her way into the living room, sitting on the couch across from Custer. "You should head out, we're all leaving in a few because we're going to my friend's play." She lied, they weren't all going, but she still didn't want the man in their house. "I'll leave when y'all leave. How about that?" Custer questioned and the girl rolled her eyes. "I don't think that's necessary. We're all supposed to be dressed and out right now-we're running late, and with you being here, it's holding us back." Melanie explained, trying to stay calm.
She was already nervous about the play, she wanted everything to go well, and on top of that, she was nervous about going on stage for the final cast bow, even if it was just for ten seconds.
"I won't hold you back." Custer shook his head and the girl groaned. Melanie flipped him off and stood up as she walked over to the kitchen, getting herself a caprisun from the fridge.
Faye exited the living room, making sure to bump into Melanie. "Faye holy shit I almost dropped my juice on me-" Faye held her fingers up to her lips. "What?" Melanie whispered. The blonde girl brought her hand up to Melanie's ear and began to whisper as quietly as she could.
"Custer has a mic in the bush, and they're listening from his phone. Don't say a thing." She explained making Melanie's eyes widened. "I'm gonna make sure he isn't up to no good. Keep a close eye." Melanie whispered back as she walked back into the living room, sitting back on the couch. Custer pulled out his half smoked cigarette and started smoking it again. As if on cue Ash then walked into the living room, sitting on the arm of the couch that his sister was sitting on.
