chapter seventeen: tomorrow will be chaotic.

The brown girl usually tried to keep things in her control at all times, because if it wasn't, she'd be doomed. It was simply the fact that she knew how to handle things when they were in her hands, she had time to think of plans and what not to do. Things were easier that way for her.

But her separate friendship with Rue, Elliot, and Jules wasn't one of them. It was already hard trying to decide who to hang out with after school. But things were getting hectic by the minute.

It started when Elliot leaned against the locker beside her locker. It was Thursday morning, Melanie wasn't thinking about anything, she was just waiting for the weekend.

"Hey, Lanie." She smiled at the sound of the boys voice as she looked behind her locker door to see Elliot. "Hey, Elly." She smiled as she grabbed her heavy binder for math, having math first period was exhausting but she was glad that she got her worst subject out of the way first. "So, the carnival is tomorrow. Wanna go with me?" He asked, her eyes widened. "Already-I coulda sworn the carnival happened like three days ago." Of course she was being dramatic, but the last time she was at the carnival she was with Rue, third wheeling, then with Maddy and Cassie, then stayed to sell pretzels with her brothers. She did and didn't have fun at the same time.

"Well, its back again. So do you wanna go with me?" He asked and she smiled. "Of course I'll go with you." Melanie said and the zipped up her backpack and quickly put the right backpack strap on her right shoulder. The two began to walk down the hall, Melanie spoke up. "The last time I was there it wasn't the best so I hope this time it goes well. I'd rather have fun than third wheel-or some other shit. Promise me we'll have a good time?" She looked up at him with a small smile. Elliot looked at her, he couldn't help but smile back immediately. "I promise. Everything's on me, too. I'll be your sugar daddy tomorrow." He teased and she laughed. "You don't have to do that you know? My brother's will run a pretzel booth and I can get us free food and drinks." She said and Elliot shook his head. "Who wants to eat only pretzels? Besides I want to. It can be like our first date." Elliot said, he was hoping to get a good reaction out of her, which he did.

He laughed at how wide her eyes gotten as she placed her hand over her heart. "Elliot." She warned. "What? You don't like the idea of us having our first date?" He continued to tease her. "I-I do, I just wasn't you expecting to say that." She laughed nervously. "Chill, Lanie. I was kidding." Elliot said, but he titled his head and squinted his eyes. "Unless you actually wanna have a first date." He added and she shrugged.

"Yeah, that seems fun." The girl tried to act like she was playing it cool, but in the inside she was freaking out. "Alright, I guess it's a date." He said. "Yeah, a date." She nodded.

Around lunch time Melanie was caught up by Rue in the bathroom as Melanie washed her hands. "Hey, Mel. Did you hear about the carnival tomorrow?" She asked and Melanie nodded, looking at the girl through the mirror. "Yup, you going?" She questioned. "Yeah, I was just about to ask you that...I don't have anyone to go with, but I don't wanna go alone. I need a familiar face there, you know?" Ever since Rue got clean, she had been ten times more awkward and it made Melanie laugh.

"You're so awkward now." Melanie flicked water on Rue's face making Rue close her eyes as she attempted to dodge the water. "Fuck you!" Rue laughed as she washed her hands, now flicking water at Melanie, making the curly haired girl laugh. "Are you sitting with Elliot for lunch today?" Rue asked and Melanie shook her head. "He's staying back in class for extra help. Mainly because the teacher made him." She explained and Rue smiled. "Great, I get my best friend back from her clingy boyfriend, lets go." Rue said, Melanie blushed. "He's not my boyfriend, Rue!" Melanie said as they walked out of the bathroom. "He basically is!" Rue shrugged.

The two spent their lunch barely touching their food, they only ate the tolerable things then talked about any and everything they could. Rue was happy that Melanie wasn't letting their friendship fall apart since the group's friendship fell apart. She appreciate Melanie for always making time for everyone.

Once last period came around Melanie was excited to get home, it was closer to the weekend by the second.

"Melanie." The brown girl looked behind her to see Jules smiling. "Hey." Melanie replied as she noticed the teacher reading her book. It was work time so the teacher was in her own space, leaving the kids to whisper and write notes to each other.

"Are you going to the carnival?"

You gotta be kidding me.

Melanie thought as she nodded. "Yeah, you?" Melanie questioned. "I don't know. I want to, but I don't know who to go with." Jules started. "Well, I'm going with Elliot. Then I'll hang with Rue, and if I see you maybe we can hang for a bit?" The girl didn't want to be rude. "Great, I'll come two hours after it opens-that way you can have time with them." Jules said and Melanie smiled. "Great, I'll see you there." Melanie said as she turned back around.

Melanie rubbed her face, sighing deeply.

"Yeah, so I'll hang out with you-then Rue-then Jules, lastly I'll end my night with you as the actual date, so don't leave, don't get lost, don't get into any fights-none of that shit." Melanie listened as she walked down the hall with Elliot. "Wow, how can you think so lowly of me?" He gasped sarcastically before speaking again. "You're a busy woman now, huh?" Elliot chucked and she smiled softly. "Yeah, I guess. It keeps me on my toes for sure. Anyway, text me later. I need to prepare because tomorrow will be chaotic as fuck." Melanie said as she pulled Elliot in a hug. "Seriously, text me. I hate being bored without you." She added as they pulled away from the hug. "I will, miss clingy." He said as she kissed his cheek mindlessly. "Yeah never mind, I won't miss you." She said and Elliot laughed.
