chapter twelve: chances?

"Don't fucking burn me, Rue!" Melanie squealed as Rue flat ironed the hair in back of her head. "I'm not! Chill, Mel." Rue laughed.

It was Sunday night, and the girls were hanging out with each other all day. Melanie had a random idea to flat iron her hair and Rue was down to help. "I missed this. I'm glad that you're here-I feel like I haven't seen you in years." Melanie said while Rue combed out the hair that was now straight. "Oh shit, Mel, your hair grew so much since ninth grade." Rue said and Melanie smiled while grabbing her hair and pulling it over her shoulder, checking the length. "Wow. I haven't done this in so long, I forgot how light it's gonna feel." She laughed.

It took three hours, to perfectly straighten Melanie's hair, Rue spent her time helping Melanie as much as she could. But by the time she was finished, Rue had to leave so they said goodbye to each other.

Melanie walked Rue out to the front watching as Rue smiled softly. "I'll see you tomorrow right?" Melanie asked. "Yeah, remember what I said though." Rue said as she rode away. Rue had explained how she was still trying to forgive Elliot, obviously Melanie told Rue about the her and Elliot making up already, but Rue said she needed more time and Melanie understood why.

Rue didn't specifically know about Elliot and Jules hooking up, but when Melanie spoke about it, Rue's reaction made her realize that Rue didn't know all along until that moment. Of course Rue suspected something between the two because the day they showed up at her house she noticed Jules in Elliot's clothes and something just felt off. So of course this made Rue feel a little more upset and now she needed more time to forgive him.

"Melan-woah, I like your hair." The brown girl turned around to see Faye standing in front of the door. "Thanks, Rue and I did it." She smiled softly. "Well, Fez says we're watching a movie and wondered if you wanted to come and watch it." Faye explained, Melanie could smell the popcorn as she entered the house. "Yeah, a little family time sounds fun." Melanie smiled as she walked into the living room.

"What movie are we watching?" The girl asked as she sat on the couch. "The Goonies." Fez said, looking over to his sister. "Your hair looks dope." He said making her laugh. "Thanks, Fez. Is Ash watching it with us?" She asked. "Yeah, he said that he'd be out in a minute." Fez shrugged and she nodded. "I'll go get him." Melanie sighed as she stood up walking over to her little brothers room and knocking on the door. "Come in." The boy sounded uninterested. "Ash, stop being a security guard and come have family time and watch The Goonies with us." She said, noticing how the boy sat at his computer set up watching the live camera footage.

"Fine, I'm coming." Ash said and she smiled.

First period was a class that Melanie didn't mind, but she sure as hell sat as far away as she could from Jules with no intentions of talking to her. But today, Jules had other intentions.

"Hey, Melanie, can we talk after class?" Jules whispered, Melanie thought about it for a second, she had already forgave and talked to Elliot so it was only fair that she'd talk to Jules. "Sure." The girl nodded softly as the teacher started his lesson. Jules walked back to her desk with a smile while Melanie scolded herself.

So much for not talking to her.

Throughout the class all Melanie could think of what to say to Jules. It was hard enough for her to talk to Elliot at first and now Jules. Of course it couldn't have been that hard, but she still felt awkward around the girl. Not only did Melanie see Jules naked on Elliot's bed, but Melanie also slapped Jules, and that sort of made her feel bad.

So once the bell rang the students were up and out, but Melanie trailed behind to wait for Jules to finish packing her things. The girls then walked out of class together in silence.

"I just wanna say that Elliot told me everything. He told me how much he liked you and how he only did what he did because he was using me as a distraction and rebound-I know about how you two kissed before everything went down. And I know that I was in the wrong for even doing such a thing because I was with Rue..but that's not the point, I wanna apologize for everything I put you through. I haven't been a good friend to you, and I'm pretty shitty, especially for not apologizing to you when I first saw you after New Years. I don't know why I did any of those things to be honest, and I regret them all. I really appreciate you, Melanie. Getting slapped by you wasn't the best but I deserved it..I apologize for ruining what you had with Elliot." Jules got straight to the point. Melanie took in every bit of her words, apologies made her feel guilty for some reason.

"Im pretty good at giving people second-third-how ever many chances. It's a bad habit, but sometimes I don't regret doing it...so I forgive you. That'll be shitty of me to forgive Elliot and not forgive you because it takes two to do what you guys did. And I just don't wanna talk about that night anymore, we can move past it." Melanie said and Jules smiled down at the girl. "But here's where I gotta be completely honest. I don't know how to continue all of our friendships. It's stressful because Rue is keeping her distance from both of you, Elliot is keeping his distance away from you-and you're keeping your distance from him. I don't know how to hang out with you guys anymore. It feels nice, but it's all flipped around and I'm just in the middle of it..I'm just running back and forth between you three and I don't know what to do, I don't want any of you to be mad at me for hanging out with one another." Melanie explained as she stopped by her locker.

From down the hall, Elliot's eyes were on Melanie. He could tell that she was upset, but also happy in some way. He noticed every little thing about her, mainly because he always found himself staring at her features.

"Yeah, I get it, maybe you can just pick days to hang out with us separately. But then again that's maybe too much things to do, so I get it if you don't have time for me..." Jules said softly. "I'll try? I don't know if that's possible, but I'll try." Melanie said and Jules nodded. "I'll see you around." The blonde girl said as she waved. "See you." Melanie turned to wave back at Jules.

As Melanie closed her locker door, her heart dropped once Elliot was appeared behind it. "You look pretty, I like what you did with your hair." He spoke, nonchalantly as usual. "You scared the shit out of me, but thanks, Elly. You look great as always." She playfully rolled her eyes. "I know. You didn't have to tell me that." He shrugged with a smirk. "What you mean is, I don't have to lie, cause I definitely lied. You look like ass today." She said and Elliot laughed. "So it's like that?" He asked. "Something like that." She shrugged as the bell rang. "Ready for second period?" Melanie challenged by changing the subject. "I'm gonna get the last words one day, I swear." Elliot muttered as he placed his hands in his pocket and started walking. "Yeah, you can always dream." Melanie winked at him. "That was the most cliché, basic shit I've ever seen." Elliot laughed. "I know, I kinda almost cringed at myself but had to play it cool."

Edited: yessss😻🫶🏽

A/N: Yeah, I couldn't avoid Jules bc if I was rly in the same situation as Mel I would've forgave her if I forgave Elliot. That just wouldn't be fair to forgive Elliot and not forgive Jules for doing the SAME EXACT THING W EACH OTHER. (yeah IK she's done more things to RUE, but she hasn't done a lot to Melanie. Melanie wasn't cheated on so that's she forgave both of them, also this is a Elliot book so ofc she'd forgive him💀) now pls don't start arguments in the comments abt this😭 bc IK how some ppl are on Wattpad. LMFAO just chill.
