POV: Scout Beckett
They don't understand how I feel, I get that I'm smart, but it just feels like they praise me so I don't look so down. But, it doesn't help me, not one bit. My name is Scout Beckett, I'm 14½ years old, and in the 9th grade. How am I a grade ahead? I'm just naturally smart, which my friends and family seemed to praise me for. Evelyn Valentine is my best friend, and besides my other friends, Alex and Kyrie, he's the only one I feel confident around. I've never been a confident person, it started back in 4th grade when the kids called me names like Nerd or Poindexter, and it began to push down on me. They would beat me up, just because I got higher grades than them, or if I tried to talk to anyone they knew, especially girls. That's how I began to get less and less talkative, more anti-social, and way less confident in myself than I was before. No one really believed that I was worth anything besides being a punching bag like I'm just...worthless. Who could care about someone like me? Someone who is too smart for anyone to want to be friends with, just some loser that no one likes. Am I really that hateful?
(2 Years Ago - 5.5)
I usually sit by myself at lunch every day, since no one wants to sit anywhere near me, thinking they'll become a nerd like I'm a disease. Always the one getting either Nineties or Hundreds for grades, the one they can always make fun of for being smart, even though they don't know who they're hurting. Who would ever sit with me?... "Hey, is it ok if I sit here with you?" asked a boy in a blue hoodie. "Yeah...sure" I replied to him as he sat down. He seemed to be able to put up a smile, unlike me. "So, what's your name?" he asked, seemingly interested. "Scout..." I replied, very unsure that he was trying to be friendly. "Wow, that's a really cool name, I'm Evelyn by the way," he said, still with a smile on his face. I feel like he's trying to make me feel like I'm a piece of trash, but no one's ever talked to me this long with a genuine smile. He looked at my papers and was surprised. "Wow, your grades are really high, you must be smart!" he said, still with a shocked look on his face. "Hehe...It's not really that big of a deal" I replied, giving off a tiny smile. "It is a big deal, I wish I was smart like you," he said, making some glass wall between us shatter. It seemed like he actually wanted to know me, instead of putting me down. "Why did you wanna sit here, Evelyn?..." I asked him, wanting to know the true answer. "Well, because you were alone, and I wanted to make a friend this year" he replied, grinning. That answer is how me and him became who the two of us are to each other...., Best Friends.
