"Patty and I weren't always in the lifestyle," Lawrence began. "I met her in this old, podunk bar. We're talking more than twenty years ago. She was sitting at a table all by herself, drinkin' and lookin' as sad as ever. From the very first moment I saw her, I thought she was the prettiest girl I'd ever seen. She had this pretty, curly blonde hair. For the longest time, I called her Goldilocks."
Destiny's eyes kept drifting down to Patty as Lawrence spoke, noting the older lady's posture, the respect she had in not interrupting her Dominant. While she watched Patty, she could feel that Aubrey was watching her, observing her. Probably checking for her reactions while Lawrence told his story.
"She was all bent out of shape over some dingbat who left her for another woman," Lawrence told them. "Idiot. To this day, he probably regrets that decision, but I thank the man. If he hadn't have left her, then she wouldn't have been sitting in that bar. If she hadn't been in that bar, then I would have never had the chance to walk up to her and introduce myself. I courted her just like any other man courted their girlfriend. We went on dates, got to know each other. And it was amazing. We had a lot of fun together. There was nothing wrong with our vanilla lifestyle. We were happy with it, and with each other. But...one of my buddies Max is the bad influence that led me to looking into the lifestyle known as BDSM."
The strong scent of baking meat wafted into the room.
Patty turned her head in the slightest of ways, not quite looking at Lawrence.
"Go on," he encouraged.
She stood up and left the room.
"She has meatloaf in the oven," Lawrence explained to Aubrey and Destiny. "Now, where was I?" He raised a hand to his forehead.
"You were telling us about Max," Aubrey said.
Lawrence smiled. "Yeah, that old jackass. We're friends to this day, although he still lives in Texas. I don't get to see him much. But, yeah. He's the one who introduced Patty and me to this wild ride of a lifestyle. He only dabbled here and there, but Patty and I dove into the lifestyle headfirst. That's just how we are. We like to try new things, see new places. It's something we have in common. Max introduced us to this group back in Texas. They called themselves KACT: the Kinky Adults Coalition of Texas. We met up every two weeks. Some of the people in the group were lifestyle vets. They'd done everything, seen everything, and still lived to tell the tale. Some of the people were new to the lifestyle and wanted to learn about it. Patty and I...we were what the youngsters call today newbs. We had done our little bit of research, but research can only get you so far in a lifestyle like this. There is so much information out there, and just when you think you've seen all that you can see, there is some crazy couple out there that has reinvented the wheel and has incorporated an entirely different new spin on the lifestyle. Patty and I dug our little noses around, poked into some books, talked to Max and some of the buddies he'd met in the lifestyle, but our eyes were not truly opened until that group. That group became...almost like an addiction, really. In that group, we got to ask all of the questions we had, hear how couples dealt with certain issues or concerns, and see just how much this lifestyle meant to people."
It would have been nice to attend a group session like that, Destiny thought.
Lawrence tilted his head to the side. "You've never joined one of the groups?"
Destiny looked up at Aubrey, then shook her head at Lawrence.
Lawrence glanced at Aubrey in surprise. "Groups can be an essential resource when it comes to understanding the lifestyle and each other. There were things that Patty wanted to tell me, but didn't because she thought she was overanalyzing, or overreacting to my treatment of her. There were issues that she had with my training of her, but if she hadn't attended the group to see that instances like that were normal, then...hell, I don't know if she would have stuck it out with me."
