It was dark. Off in the distance, Destiny could hear the sound of the piano. There was so little light, she couldn't tell where she was standing. "Hello?" she called out. "Aubrey?" She started moving forward, even though she couldn't tell where she was headed. Her first instinct was to walk towards the music, so that's what she did.
The sound of the piano grew louder and louder, but she moved past it somehow. The sound was coming from in front of her, but at a certain point, she could hear the music behind her. A frown formed on her face, and she took a few steps back. The sound of the piano was in front of her. She took a few steps forward. Behind her. So strange, she thought, taking a few steps back again.
A spotlight beamed down, and a child playing the piano appeared right in front of her. It was a little boy, who looked to be five or six years old. He looked to be bi-racial, but she couldn't be sure. He was very light-skinned.
She reached out and touched his curly hair, just to see if he was real. His hair was soft beneath her fingertips.
He looked up at her and beamed up at her. One of his front teeth was missing. "Mommy, you have to listen. I've been practicing."
Her eyes widened, and she blinked wordlessly at him. "What did you just call me?"
The little boy rolled his eyes. "Mommy. Listen!"
She reached her hand out and placed it beneath his chin. With a gentle motion, she turned his face towards her. She searched his face, looking for traces of her own features. His skin was light, much lighter than hers. He had beautiful, dark round eyes. Maybe they were shaped a bit like hers, but it was hard to tell. His facial features were so small. "Where is your daddy?" she asked him.
The boy shrugged. "He's around here somewhere."
Another spotlight beamed down, and Destiny whirled around.
Aubrey stood leaning against a wall that was now only visible because of the beam of light shining on it.
Destiny smiled and ran over to him. She threw her arms around him.
He wrapped his arms around her. "This is the happiest I've ever seen you."
"This is the happiest I've ever felt in my life," she said tearfully, looking up at him. "He plays the piano just as beautifully as you do."
Aubrey looked over her shoulder. "He's a nice-looking kid, isn't he?"
"Adorable," she said, turning and watching the little boy play. "Ever since we made our relationship official, this is what I wanted for us. Not immediately, of course, but somewhere down the line."
Aubrey stared down at her, his downturned eyes dark and unreadable.
"I wanted a family with you, and when you said that you would consider having one, I thought that you would wind up changing your mind or something." She hugged him again and buried her face in his chest.
"But...I did," Aubrey said.
"You did what?" she asked, too happy for his words to fully register to her.
"I did change my mind."
She froze, with the side of her face against her chest. "Wh-what?"
"I changed my mind, Destiny. That little kid...he's not ours."
She pulled back from him. "What are you saying? Yes, he is. Look at him."
