"This was an amazing idea," Brian whispered to Destiny. "I'm guessing you're the little birdie he was talking about?"

    She smiled and nodded.

"Where did you get an idea like this?" Brian asked her.

An image of Brian yanking her into his office and making out with her against his office door sprang to mind. It was a scene from the dream she'd had last week. She felt her cheeks growing hot.

His brows furrowed and he chuckled. "Are you...are you blushing?"

"No," she said emphatically. "Shh. I'm trying to listen to Pam."

He grinned at her. "Sorry, sorry," he whispered, and lapsed into silence - but not before giving her a long, intense look.

She returned the look, then broke eye contact with him and tried to ignore the fact that he was sitting so close to her.

He turned his head towards Pam and shifted in his seat. His thigh brushed against Destiny's, sending a jolt of electricity up her leg.

Her eyes fluttered closed. She was vaguely aware that Pam was ending her speech and Maggie Stetson, the head of HR, was stepping up to thank all of the employees for their hard work. She was much more aware of the effect that Brian's seemingly unintentional physical contact was having on her.

Brian leaned in close to her. "Are you okay?"

"Me?" She blinked her eyes rapidly and sat up straighter in her seat. "Yes, I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" His deep blue eyes were filled with worry. "You look a little out of it."

"I'm good. I'm fine." Her eyes darted over to Aubrey, who was observing both of them while leaning against the wall.

After the meeting, she collected her pen and notepad and turned away from the table.

Aubrey shook the hands of a few employees, but quickly rounded the table and set a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, I just..." Had some kind of strong reaction to Brian's thigh touching me, which I can't even tell you. "I just got a little loopy for a minute."

His brows furrowed, and he turned his focus to Brian. There was a question in his eyes, but whatever it was, he didn't speak it out loud. "Maybe I should escort you back to your office," he suggested to her.

"I'm more than capable of making sure she gets back to the office safely," Brian volunteered, moving to stand near Destiny.

"I'm telling both of you, I'm fine now," Destiny told them, smiling pleasantly at a few employees who looked their way. "What we need to do is break up this pow wow, and fast. People are already starting to notice that we're always together."

Aubrey hesitated, but ultimately nodded and moved away from her, to greet a few other employees.

Destiny turned around and scanned the room for Zorica. "Where is Zorica? She was just here."

"Maybe she's already halfway back to the office by now," Brian commented, walking towards the conference room entrance. "Or, more likely, she could have snuck out early to take an extra smoke break."

As soon as they exited the conference room, the fogginess in her head started to clear. She took a deep breath as they walked through the offices on the thirty-fifth floor.

"About what happened in there..." Brian paused as he walked alongside her. "Since you stayed with me, have you gone to a doctor at all? Gotten checked out?"

She frowned up at him. "Checked out for what? I told you I'm fine."

"Yeah, I know," he said, tossing dark hair out of his eyes. "I mean..." He glanced around them and said, "I'll wait until we have the chance to speak alone."

What is he talking about? she wondered. They reached the glass doors, then walked down the short hall to wait near the elevators.

He surveyed their surroundings, then leaned in close to her. "When we were together...we didn't use anything. Is it possible that you're...could you be...?"

"No!" she hissed at him, giving him a crazy look. She hugged her notepad to her chest. She double-checked to make sure they were alone. Then she added, "I told you to pull out, and you did."

"Yeah, but that's not always one hundred percent," he told her. "I mean...it's probably too soon for you to be showing pregnancy symptoms, because it wasn't that long ago that we were together, but...you should take a test. Just to be sure."

The elevator doors opened, but the dinging sound didn't even register to Destiny. She turned her back to the elevators. The last time I had my period was in D.C., she thought to herself. And it was on time, or relatively on time, at least. I'm not pregnant. His leg just touched mine and that sent my nerves a little haywire. That's all. Right? Fear gripped her, and her mind took her back to the night she'd made love with Brian. She tried to remember every single detail, trying to determine a moment when it would have been possible for conception to occur.

"Destiny," he called out to her.

She whirled around in a panic. "Yeah?"

He stood in the elevator, holding the doors open. "Are you coming?"

She nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, I was just...thinking." She joined him in the elevator. What were the odds they'd get the elevator all to themselves? Standing with her back pressed against a flat, silver handrail, she tried to sort through her own thoughts.

Brian looked back at her as the elevator doors closed. "I hate to sound like a fucking broken record, but...you don't look okay, Destiny."

She dropped her pen and notepad to the floor, and cupped her hands around her stomach. "I'm not pregnant," she told him. "I can't be."

He pressed the button for the thirty-fourth floor, then closed the distance between them. "Hey."

She raised fearful eyes to him.

"Whatever happens, it will be fine," he said.

The elevator started moving, but then stopped abruptly. The main lights in the elevator shut off and a small emergency light flashed on.

Brian jerked his head up, and an arm instinctively went around her. Keeping a protective arm around her, he turned and pressed the Emergency button.

    "What just happened?" she whispered.

    The elevator swayed slightly.

Destiny reached out and held onto the handrail. "What just happened?" she repeated, sounding a lot more frightened than the first time she'd asked the question.

He looked up at the ceiling of the elevator, then lowered his eyes back down to her. "I guess we're stuck," he said - right before the elevator started to plummet down the elevator shaft.
