"I..." Destiny didn't know which answer to go with. If she prolonged this store visit, that would just be more opportunities for Aubrey to press the controller, but it would delay her having to experience a seizure in front of a store cashier. "I think I'm ready to check out..."

"Are you sure?" he asked with a playful glint in his eyes. "Because you don't sound certain to me."

    "I'm ready," she told him.

They moved to the front of the store. Aubrey looked relieved to be able to sit the merchandise they were buying on the conveyor belt.

The staffer they'd seen at the back of the store walked up to them and handed the a card with a barcode on it. "Hand this to the cashier so she can scan it and include the suspension kit with your purchases."

    "Thank you," Aubrey said gratefully.

"Any time, man. Thanks for everything you've done, from the music to speaking out on the fact that your personal life shouldn't affect your professional one." The staffer backed away from them.

Destiny wanted to tease Aubrey some more about how he was the guy's personal hero, but she couldn't tear her eyes off of Aubrey's left pocket. Once he'd set the items on the conveyor belt, his left hand had gravitated back into his pocket. She dreaded the moment he'd press that button. A line of people stood in front of them, and a line was beginning to form behind them. Her entire body was tense and taut with dread.

They slowly moved forward as the customers ahead of them checked out.

Destiny continued to throw nervous glances back at Aubrey, the closer they got to the cashier.

His eyes were unreadable when he looked back at her.

Her phone started ringing again. She silenced it, as he had his earlier.

"Good afternoon," the cashier greeted them. "Is this all for you today?"

"There's also this item, which was brought up to the front for us," Aubrey explained, handing over the card the staffer had provided him.

The cashier rung up their merchandise.

Destiny nervously tapped Aubrey's credit card on the ledge of the conveyor belt, desperately wishing she had the power to speed up time. When their items were rung up, it seemed that time actually slowed down. She raised the credit card, stretched out her arm, and slid it in the card reading machine. She could feel Aubrey's eyes on her as she selected the "credit" option on the touch screen of the card reader.

"Can I see the card for a moment?" the cashier asked. The sound of her voice nearly made Destiny jump out of her skin.

"Um, of course," Destiny responded, handing the card over. She looked up at Aubrey, whose eyes were still on her. His hand was still resting in his left pocket.

"I just need you to sign here," the cashier said, sliding a printed out receipt to her with a faded signature line at the bottom.

    Destiny glanced at Aubrey again.

"Go ahead," he encouraged, smiling. "Sign it."

The moment was coming; she could feel it. She took a deep breath, accepted the pen the cashier handed her, and bent her head down. It took way too much concentration for her to touch the pen to the paper, and even more to remember that she was supposed to be signing Aubrey's name and not her own. She got the "A" out before a vibrating sensation started in her lower abdomen. Her hand started to tremble, completely obliterating any hopes of writing a legible signature. Points for her, she held all moans in.
