Destiny swept the skirt of her dress aside as she descended the back steps of her temporary residence. A long stretch of private beach was now her backyard. That was the one silver lining in all of this mess. It was hard to admire the view and not think about Aubrey, the fun times she could have with him here. Remembering how much convincing it used to take to get him into a pool brought a smile to her face.
But I'm not Destiny Richards anymore, she reminded herself. I'm Karissa Engleman, now. Born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and raised in a huge family. A ton of siblings whose names I've memorized. I played basketball in high school and college, and that story would check out for anyone who looked into it, because there was a Karissa Engleman from Zion, Illinois, who resembles me and was a high school basketball star that won a scholarship. I'm a huge NBA fan, favorite player is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Other players I admire are Zach LaVine, James Harden, Kobe Bryant, and of course the king Michael Jordan. I am a travel blogger, which explains my stay here on the island. Single, never married although I've come close several times, and no children. She brought a hand up to touch freshly cropped blonde hair.
The disguise team agreed to give her a short, curly honey blonde bob instead of going for the full blonde fade they'd proposed initially. They were truly miracle workers. After the haircut, she looked different to herself but still similar enough to where she felt she'd be recognized. Once they applied makeup that adjusted the thickness and color of her brows, contouring makeup, and hazel contacts, she didn't recognize her own reflection. It was as if she was staring at someone else entirely.
Their guidance didn't end there. They provided her with more rules. She could straighten the bob if she so desired, but wasn't advised to change the color. The makeup application and contacts were a must if she intended to leave the house.
There were plenty of rules she had to adhere to. They intended to make sure she had no access to television, phone or internet. Darius explained that the rule against phone and internet were because even someone who cooperated with them would be tempted to reach out to their friends and family after a while. Because that was life threatening for both the protected citizen and their family, the FBI felt the need to prevent the citizen from having the means. The no television rule was often to prevent informants from seeing the progress of court cases or news relating to court cases and extended to overall mental health preservation.
"So, what am I expected to do while I'm out here?" she'd demanded.
"Swim, read, write. You're a journalist, right?"
"Who has no sense of current events to even begin to write any article of use," she pointed out.
"Valid point," he allowed.
"The lack of entertainment would push me to leave the house more often and isn't that a larger risk than me watching old episodes of Law & Order? You can't equip a television to only work with a DVD player or something?"
"I'll look into that option for you."
As a result of Darius being willing to look into that suggestion, she was provided with a television, DVD player and extensive DVD collection of movies and shows. She didn't know how much she'd end up watching, but it was nice to have as an option with so few other options. As much as she loved swimming, she knew that she needed other activities to keep her occupied.
Even though there's only one activity that really matters, and that's finding Aubrey. I'm not optimistic enough to think that God really passed my prayer to him. That means he's not out somewhere looking for me. If I'm lucky enough for him to be anywhere on these islands, I'm going to have to find him. Which...hopefully is relatively easy, since he's Drake. The moment he touches down at the airport, the locals would hear about it. Right?
