The sky was so perfectly blue that it looked drawn. The only clouds in sight were bright white, perfectly puffy. Sparkling blue water rested beneath the baby blue sky, reflecting the sun's warm rays.
Destiny walked along the shore with her arms wrapped around herself, donning a red and white striped sundress. The breeze teased her curls. She stopped walking, closed her eyes, and tilted her head back. One with nature, enjoying the feeling of the sun on her brown skin. Keeping her eyes closed, she protectively cupped her stomach, then proceeded walking towards a long, wooden dock.
Bare feet touched wood. She stopped again, this time because she realized that she wasn't alone. At the far end of the dock, overlooking the water, was a tall suited man with broad shoulders. She could just barely make out his silhouette in the blinding sunlight. Rubbing her belly, she moved down the dock, the hem of her dress swaying around her ankles. Her hair blew behind her. Squinting against the sunlight, she continued walking until she stood beside the man.
"You're glowing."
She bowed her head, smiling as she stared down at a stomach that still looked relatively flat.
"I knew you would make a beautiful mother, but...wow."
Her smile stretched wider as she raised her head and looked up into his face.
Dark brown hair, enchanting blue eyes, that lopsided grin whenever he was up to no good... "How long has it been since you've visited me?"
"Months," she replied.
He nodded and turned to look out over the water again. "I was going to ask if you're happy, but after seeing you...I don't even have to ask, do I?"
"I am happy," she said, following his gaze. "I'm also...scared. To death, actually. I didn't expect it to happen quite this soon."
"That's what happens when the two of you are fucking like rabbits."
"Brian."
He cast a sideglance downward and shrugged. "I guess I've got to work on my filter, huh?"
"What about you?"
He slid a hand into the pocket of his dress pants. "What about me?"
"Are you happy?"
He took a deep breath. "Happy? Chilling as some wise spirit-type who randomly stands around on docks waiting for the love of my life to visit?"
She stared down at the dock.
"I'd be happier with you," he said after some hesitation.
She didn't say anything.
He chuckled and ran a hand through his hair. "God, am I even listening to myself? I'm in heaven, and I'd still be happier with you. Pathetic, right?"
"You're a lot of things, but 'pathetic' isn't one of them," she said firmly.
He lapsed into silence. Then he asked, "Did you come here to say goodbye?"
"Goodbye?" she repeated.
"I mean...you're starting a family with him. So you probably don't want me around anymore. Right? You're having his kid. The last thing you need is to be reminded of that one mistake you made with a guy in the office, the one speedbump on your way to a happy life with Aubrey."
