chapter 11: weisz has fun on his not-date

~weisz~

The bell rings for lunch and as I pack up my stuff, Jessica turns to look at me. "The dance committee is meeting at lunch, so we won't be able to have lunch with you."

"That's okay," I say. "I know the dance committee meetings are important, and I'm excited to see what you guys come up with for the dance." It's not surprise they have yet another meeting. The dance is this Friday, so they're going to have to make sure they have everything ready for then.

"You know, you can always join the committee," Jessica says, standing up from her desk and slinging her backpack over her shoulder. "We're always looking for new members."

"Maybe next school year," I say. "I still want to settle into the school before joining anything."

"That's fair," Jessica says. "Oh, one more thing before I forget. We're all hanging out after school today if you want to join us."

"Today?" I ask. Jessica nods. "I can't. I already have plans. Sorry."

"No worries," Jessica says. "It was a late notice, anyway, so I didn't expect a yes. I just thought I'd ask. Maybe next time?"

       "Yeah, for sure."

Jessica smiles at me before she leaves the classroom to head to the dance committee meeting. I continue to pack up my stuff before I leave the classroom and head to my locker. As I put my stuff away, I text Reno to see if he wants to have lunch with me.

Part of me, a huge part of me, would rather have lunch with Reno every day, but I would feel bad if I just ditched Jessica and her friends after how welcoming they were towards me on my first day of school.

At least Reno doesn't seem to have a problem with me hanging out with him whenever the dance committee has their meetings.

Reno replied to my text, telling me that he's in the library. I guess that's where he normally is whenever he doesn't leave the school to have lunch.

I close my locker and head to the library, finding Reno in his normal spot at the back, hidden by a lot of bookshelves. He smiles at me as I sit down at the table. "Hey," he says.

"Hi," I say. "Sorry for only eating with you when the others have a meeting..."

"Nah, I don't care about that," Reno says. "I do get you to myself whenever we work together. And we are going to the roller rink after school today, so it's not like I'm always your second choice."

I sigh. "I don't like it when you call yourself a second choice."

"I know. I only call myself that because I know you don't like it." He props his elbows on the table and places his chin in his hands. "You're a very fun person to tease."

"I'd rather not be teased at all."

"And where's the fun in that?"

Reno does like teasing me, and it's very evident after school when we get to the roller rink. Like Reno said, there are a few arcade games there, but the first thing I want to do is go on the rink. However, I'm apparently not the best roller skater. It's not that I fall over a few times, I don't, but I struggle going fast. Or at a medium speed.

Reno has done a few laps around me before he stands in front of me, skating backwards as if it's not a problem for him at all. "You know, I thought you would have at least been able to go a tiny bit faster," he says. "You're like a turtle."

"Slow and steady wins the race," I say.

"If we were to race, I would have crossed the finish line at least three times before you even make it once."

I glare at Reno. "This is my first time on roller skates, I'll have you know."

"This is my first time, too."

"Yeah, I highly doubt that. You're skating effortless. Backwards, in fact. I'm pretty sure this isn't your first time roller skating."

Reno smiles. "Yeah, you're right. But you should know that it's not as hard as you might think it is. You have four wheels. Two on each side. It's a lot easier to balance, so it will be harder for you to fall if you try to go fast."

I shake my head. "It's not that I'm afraid of falling. I literally don't know how to go faster. I'm trying."

Reno holds out his hands towards me. "I'll help. Unless you're afraid of being caught holding hands with a drug dealer."

"You're still so full of jokes." I place my hands in Reno's. He holds them tight before he starts pulling me along with him, still skating backwards. He doesn't even have to check to see if he's about to bump into anyone or if he's about to crash in the wall. He just seems to know when to turn.

Reno is able to help me skate a bit faster, though not as fast as he was going when he was skating laps around me. "You know," Reno says, "it actually helps if you don't look at your feet."

I look up and away from my feet. "How would I know if I'm about to trip over myself, then?"

"Well, just think of it like walking. You don't look at your feet when you walk, do you? You just trust yourself that you know how to walk."

"Because I do know how to walk. I don't know how to skate."

Reno smiles again. "Just try not to think about it. The more you skate, the more it comes natural."

Even though I trust Reno's advice, I end up tripping over my own feet since I'm not longer watching it. At least I don't fall over, but that's only because I'm still holding onto Reno's hands, and he's quick to tighten his grip to make sure I don't fall.

He does, however, laughs at my demise. I can't be mad at him for laughing, though. He has such a nice laugh, it just makes me feel all warm inside.

And of course, I end up saying, "I like your laugh," without even meaning to. Sure, I mean it, but I'd rather not blurt it out loud.

Reno trips over his own feet, but he's able to regain his balance, standing upright and slowing down his speed. His cheeks have begin to blush a deep red. "Stop. I told you I don't take compliments well."

"Awe, but you're a very fun person to tease," I say, reminding him of his own words he told me during lunch.

Reno doesn't get mad at it. He just smiles at me before picking up his pace again. He's able to help me skate a bit faster and soon enough, I don't even have to hold his hand to do so. But the moment we stop holding hands, he decides to go skate a lap around me.

He circles back to me, skating backwards once again. "Wanna learn how to stake backwards?"

"Absolutely not," I say. "Skating forwards is enough of a struggle for me."

We skate in the rink for a bit longer before deciding to check out some of the arcade games. Reno really wanted me to play his favourite arcade game with him. It's a shooter game, but it's really fun for the two of us to play together.

In fact, everything we've been doing together has been fun. Working at the diner, going for a car ride, skating, even eating lunch. I don't think I've ever had so much fun with someone before.
