chapter 41: weisz is also done
~weisz~
I've started to understand Reno's pure discontent for everyone at school. He's staying home for the day since he had a panic attack when he was about to leave his house, so his dad insisted on him staying home.
I don't blame him. The amount of blame he has been getting just because I wanted to go to the school dance together is insane. And now that Reno isn't here today, the blame has been aimed at me instead.
Screw everyone who thought it was our fault for the dance getting cancelled.
During first period, I end up getting called down to the principal's office. If I have to guess, it's because I walked out of my fourth period class yesterday. I would have been called down yesterday, but Reno and I ended up leaving after his panic attack. I didn't want to keep him in this place if it was causing too much panic for him.
Once I get to Mrs. Sturgis's office, she gestures for me to sit on the chair in front of his desk. I do, crossing my arms over my chest as I prepare to get in trouble. "So I was informed that you walked out on your class yesterday," she says.
"I did," I say. "Sorry, but I didn't feel comfortable being in that class when students, and the teacher, were making me feel invalid."
"And how exactly were they doing that?" Mrs. Sturgis asks.
I don't even know if I want to tell her. Either way, I know she's going to side against me. She has been against me and Reno this whole time. Nothing is going to change. It's moments like these where I wish I never went to this school. I mean, of course I'm happy I transferred her because I met Reno, but this school is absolutely horrible.
"Well?" Mrs. Sturgis asks when I didn't answer right away. "Are you going to tell me?"
"Tell you what?" I ask. "That people are blaming me and Reno for the dance being cancelled when all we wanted to do was go together, just like every other couple? That Mr. Basu told me to respect everyone's opinions even though they're not even respecting who I am? You're going to side with them. You already did."
"The students are allowed to voice their disappointment for the dance being cancelled," Mrs. Sturgis says.
"Are you serious?" I ask. "And what? Reno and I aren't allowed to voice our disappointment for being banned from the dance? It's hypocritical and so unfair."
Mrs. Sturgis doesn't address how hypocritical it is; probably because she knows it is. Instead, she decides to change the subject completely in order to soon end the meeting. "For walking out of class, I'm giving you detention after school." She writes up a detention slip before handing it to me. "You may head back to class."
I take the slip out of her hand, admittedly a bit forcefully. "Fine. Whatever." It's not like I'm going to show up anyway. I'm done with this school. Done with everyone at this school. I don't care if the principal and teachers are in a place of authority. I shouldn't have to respect authority if they're not respecting me.
Despite wanting to leave right now, I just head back to my first period class. I can always leave during lunch if it continues to get out of hand.
First period soon ends but before I can leave, Ms. Maywood asks if she can talk to me. I wait for all my classmates to leave before I walk up to the front of the class. "I just want to say how sorry I am for what you and Reno are going through," Ms. Maywood says. "Believe me, I tried to fight it."
