chapter 43: weisz can't wait
~weisz~
"You know, I never thought I'd spend semester break in the hospital," I say. "And before you tell me I'm being dramatic, yes, I know that this is just a check up, but I would rather it not be when I'm all hyped to go back to East Vista."
"I'm glad you brought up the fact that I was probably going to call you dramatic," Reno says. "We're literally in the waiting room right now. It's not like you got admitted into the hospital."
I lean back into the chair. "Fair point. I just hate my check ups. It just reminds me of the first time my doctor told me I have leukaemia. Plus, there's the chance that my treatment isn't working, so there's a chance I'll hear my doctor say 'Sorry, Weisz, it's not working'."
"Weisz, your treatment is working," Reno assures, resting his hand on my leg. "You wouldn't have been allowed to go out in public again if it wasn't. You wouldn't have even been released from the hospital."
I know Reno is right, but it's just hard thinking about the positive side of all of this, especially when my leukaemia relapsed. I'm just constantly worrying that I'm going to keep relapsing over and over again until there's no chance of making it.
I try not to think about it, but it's so hard.
My name is soon called to meet with my doctor, so Reno and I get up and head to his office. I'm glad Reno was able to come wit me. He's such a comforting person to be around. The only downside is he won't stop teasing my about his car since we took it here.
Dr. Valberg asks the questions he normally asks when my appointment starts. How has my energy been? How are my symptoms? Is there any concerns I have? After his questions, he takes a blood sample to see if my treatment is working or not. It will take him at least a day to get the results back to me, so I'm now free to go.
As Reno and I leave the hospital to head to his car, he says, "So I've been meaning to tell you something."
"Are you pregnant?" I ask.
Reno snorts a laugh. "Please, if anyone is pregnant in this relationship, it would be you."
"Uh, we switch, so it can be any of us," I say. "Okay, serious mode, what have you been meaning to tell me?"
"My dad is on a road trip with his biker friends for a few days," Reno says. "Meaning I'll be home alone. And you know how absolutely terrified I am of staying in my house all by myself. If only I had a strong and brave boyfriend who would be more than happy to stay with me until my dad comes home."
"As much as I would love to, you know how protective my parents are during my treatment," I say. "They'll probably freak out that they won't be able to keep an eye on me twenty-four seven. But it doesn't hurt to ask them, right?"
As it turns out, asking them does, indeed, hurt. They did freak out at the mere thought that I would be spending a few nights outside of the house without them in sight.
I sigh as I listen to my mom list all the things that could go wrong. "Mom," I interrupt. "My treatment is going well. You know it is. You even let me go to some of my appointments by myself. And it's not like I'm going to be on my own. I'll be with Reno. You always say how happy you are that he's always helping me out and treats me well."
"Another concern I have is you two being in a house all by yourself," Mom says.
"Why?" I ask. "We're responsible. It's not like we're going to throw a party or something. We don't have friends in this town, anyway. Except for Padma but there's no way she would let us throw a party."
Mom sighs. "That isn't what I was talking about, Weisz."
"She, and I as well, are concerned about you two, a loving couple, being all by yourself," Dad says.
I still don't understand why Mom and Dad are so worried. I'm responsible. Reno's responsible. We're not going to mess up his house at all. I'd be too afraid to, if I'm being honest. I know Roger is an extremely nice man, but that doesn't mean he doesn't scare me at all. He does, just a tiny bit, though.
Reno taps my shoulder before leaning closer to me and whispering in my ear, "They're talking about sex, Weisz."
"Oh," I say slowly. "Yeah, that makes sense." I look at Mom and Dad. "You do know remember that I'm in a queer relationship, right? Neither of us can get pregnant."
Mom and Dad look at each other as if they've completely forgotten despite my boyfriend standing beside me. It's not like they don't accept me being in a relationship with another boy. They do accept it. They're extremely supportive of it. As long as I'm not with someone who treated me like Marie, they're happy.
But I guess it never clued into them that Reno and I will never have to worry about what most straight couples have to worry about.
"If it makes you feel better, Weisz's stamina makes it hard to go too far right now," Reno says.
"Reno!" I say. I'd rather him not say something like that to my parents.
"What?" Reno asks. "It's true."
"Yeah, but... Oh, forget it." I look back at my parents. "So can I? I promise I'll text you if I need something. I'll even give you daily updates about how I'm doing, even if I'm doing well."
"There's also school," Dad says. "It starts up again tomorrow. How can we be sure you won't skip and just stay home?"
"Because we're both going to East Vista," I say. "Sure, school can be boring, but we're both really excited to go there. I can see my friends daily again and we won't have to worry about being so harshly discriminated against."
"Plus, my dad wouldn't have left me home alone if he didn't think I would be responsible enough to wake up on my own and head to school," Reno says. "I used to go to his parents' house whenever he went on his road trips, but now he knows I'm old enough to be on my own."
Mom and Dad look at each other one more time before Dad nods. Mom looks back at me. "Okay, here are the conditions. Text us every night to let us know how your day was. Text us as soon as you wake up so we know you're going to school. And text us if you need anything."
"I'm also going to give Roger a call to see if he's okay with you staying over," Dad says.
I nod. "Yeah, of course. That's fair."
Dad walks off to call Roger, but the call doesn't take long. He soon walks back over. "He's okay with it. So I guess it's okay if you follow the conditions your mother gave you."
"I will," I say before giving my parents a hug. "Thank you."
I gesture for Reno to follow me to my bedroom so we can pack up some clothes and other belongings. Us we're heading up the stairs, Reno whispers, "Get ready to live your leather jacket fantasy."
I glare at Reno. "Stop it. I don't have one."
"We'll see."
