chapter 17: weisz feels lucky

~weisz~

Celine has been staring at me the past couple minutes while I'm trying to eat my breakfast in peace. She takes a few bites out of her cereal before going back to staring at me, almost suspiciously. Eventually, I get tired of her eyes on me so I say, "Can I help you?"

"You've been insanely happy all weekend," Celine says. "Plus, you won't stop smiling at your phone."

"And?" I ask. "Am I not allowed to smile at my phone anymore? If I see a funny video, do I just have to sit there without a smile?"

Celine shakes her head. "I don't think it's funny videos that's been making you smile. Did you finally ask out that girl you have a crush on?"

"Nope," I say, which technically isn't a lie since it's not a girl I have a crush on. It's an extremely attractive boy who makes my heart beat every time I look at him. I guess Celine is right about one thing; that I've been happy all weekend. How can I not? Reno feels the same way I feel about him. We're officially dating now. I've never felt so lucky to be dating him.

Celine, however, does believe my answer. "You're lying."

       "I'm not lying," I say.

"Right," Celine says. She looks over at Grandma, who's also eating breakfast at the table. "Do you hear your grandson lying? I think you should punish him."

I rub my forehead. "Can you stop acting like a kid? Seriously, you accuse me of lying for every single thing and then say I should be punished. You don't get to say whether or not I'm lying about something."

"Okay," Celine says in a sing-song voice, indicating she still doesn't believe me. I don't know why she always tries to get me in trouble. Part of me thinks it's because I never got in trouble a few years back because of certain circumstances, but that wasn't my fault. At least Celine never got in trouble for things my parents refused to punish me for. If I stayed out late, I wouldn't get punished. Celine stayed out the next day, she wouldn't be punished.

There were just some other things I wouldn't get punished for. I guess it annoyed her.

I finish eating my breakfast, wanting to head off to school so I can see Reno. But, of course, Celine keeps pestering me that I really did ask out the so-called girl I have a crush on. She finished her breakfast shortly after I do, following me to the front door. "Can you at least tell me her name?"

"I told you, I don't have a girlfriend," I say, putting on my shoes.

       "You're still lying," Celine says.

"Celine," Mom says. "Leave your brother alone. When he chooses to tell us that he has a girlfriend, then he'll tell us."

Celine huffs. "I just want to be happy for him. His last girlfriend was brutal. He deserves a better one."

"I get that," Mom says. "But, again, he'll tell us when he wants to tell us."

I don't know if I'm just overthinking things, but I feel like by my mom's choice of words, she also thinks I have a girlfriend. She's just trying to seem supportive by telling Celine I'll tell everyone when I want.

I might as well tell them the truth now. After all, Celine does go to the same school as me. It won't take long for Celine to find out. Which will probably be my fault, since I'll be very attempted to be affectionate with Reno.
