chapter 51: weisz is surprised

~weisz~

"I don't get why I have to follow you around in the grocery store," I say.

Reno stops the cart to grab some sourdough bread. He looks for the freshest one before putting it in the cart. "Because I don't like going alone and my dad's busy. What, you don't want to be near me?"

"You know that's not what I meant," I say. "It's just that normally when someone gets snacks and stuff for my birthday, I don't get to go with them."

"Well, I don't see why that has to be a rule," Reno says as he stars pushing the cart again. "I mean, wouldn't you rather pick out most of the snacks yourself instead of just being surprised? If you're with me, you have complete control over what snacks I buy."

"I guess," I say. "I wouldn't have minded if you picked out the snacks without my help, though. Anything would have beat my sixteenth birthday."

"Yeah, your friends told me about that," Reno says. "I'm sorry about that."

"It's whatever," I say. "I got used to the idea that I can get sick at any time and would have to be admitted into the hospital for a while." I release a breath of relief. "I'm just glad that I'm not in the hospital this time."

Reno smiles at me before leading me to the bakery aisle. "So obviously your parents already got you a cake. Sorry, spoilers. But is there any other sweets you want to have?"

I look at all the baked goods before my eyes landed on a container of mini chocolate cupcakes. I pick up the container. "This. I love me my chocolate cupcakes."

I put it into the cart before we continue on down the grocery store, picking out a few snacks here and there. We're just going to be spending my birthday at Reno's house since it's slightly bigger than mine. There would be more room for my friends to join us there.

Besides, Reno has a lot of video games for us to play. It might not seem like anything special, but all I want is to hang out with my friends. Nothing more.

Reno's phone beeps with a text message, so he pulls the device out of his pocket to read it. He replies before putting it back in his pocket. "Is there anything else you want for snacks? We don't need to get too much since I do have a lot at home already."

I look into the cart before I shake my head. "No, this is good enough."

"Then let's head to the check out," Reno says.

We didn't get too much stuff, so it doesn't take long to check out our items. Once Reno pays for everything, we bring it out of the grocery store and to his car. It doesn't take long for us to get home and once we do, Reno offers to carry most of the grocery bags.

"You know I can carry some stuff, right?" I ask.

"Yeah, but I want to show off in front of you," Reno says. "Doesn't me carrying a lot of bags and flexing my muscles make me attractive?"

"Everything makes you attractive," I say as I follow Reno to the front steps of his house.

Despite carrying most of the bags, Reno is able to efficiently get his keys out of his pocket to unlock the door. He lets me go in first so I can close the door behind us. I reach for the light switch and the moment the lights turn on, my friends jump up from various places they're hiding in the living room before yelling out, "Surprise!"

I've got to say, I'm definitely surprised. I jump a bit from the start, my heart beating at a slightly rapid place. "Shit, guys," I say, placing my hand over my heart. "I'm fragile."

Marcel nudges Adam's side. "See? I told you jumping out was a bad idea."

I shake my head. "No, no, it's fine. I just have a weak immune system. Not a weak heart. Just... Give me a moment."

As I wait for my heart to calm down a bit, I take a look around the living room to see that my friends went all out for my birthday. Instead of just placing video games all day, they decorated Reno's living room so it looks like an arcade. It looks like they even rented some arcade games and a claw machine. LED lights were stripped across the ceiling to help make the living room to feel like an arcade.

"Holy shit," I say. "You guys did all this?"

"Of course," Jane says as she walks over before giving me a hug. "Happy birthday."

       "Thank you," I say.

Amelia, Adam, and Marcel also come over to wish me a happy birthday. In the meantime, Reno heads to the dining room to set out the snacks we just brought.

Amelia grabs my arm and pulls me into the living room. "Isn't this cool? It was Reno's idea. He knows how much you love arcades, but how recently, you've been a bit iffy about going out in public since you already have to spend too much time at school. So we brought the arcade to you."

"This is amazing," I say. "Thank you."

"Oh, this isn't even the best part," Adam says. "You should check out the dining room. We turned it into a concession stand. I'll be playing the role of the attendant."

"For the last time, Adam, we're not actually paying money for the food," Jane says. "You're not going to actually be paid with money."

       "Never mind, then," Adam says.

They lead me to the dining room where I can see the so-called concession stand, and they were not overreacting. Complete with a popcorn machine and slushy machine, this truly was decorated like a concession stand.

"I'm going to say this again," I say. "Holy shit."

Reno smiles at me as he continue to lay out the snacks we brought. "I take it you like it?"

"I love it," I say. "It's so... amazing. Definitely makes up for celebrating my birthday in the hospital."

"Fun fact, this still isn't the best part," Amelia says. She walks over to Reno and pats his shoulder. "Your boyfriend over here actually built the claw machine. By hand."

"You're kidding," I say. "You actually built it?"

"Well, it wasn't just me," I say. "My dad and I have been working on it together for about two years now. We never really got around to finishing it until recently, so I thought it would be perfect for here."

"You're so fucking hot," I say. "And talented. Literally marry me."

Reno just smiles at me as Amelia says, "Yeah, hi, can you simp at another time? Thank you."

"Yeah, don't make us feel like the third wheel," Adam says. "Or the..." He counts everyone. "The sixth wheels? I don't know. Just don't make us feel left out."

"Go check out the games," Reno says to me. "I'm almost done in here."

I can't help but kiss Reno's cheek before heading back into the living room with my friends. It really doesn't take Reno long to join us and when he does, this becomes the best birthday I've ever had. I have so much fun playing games and talking with my friends without worrying about feeling too exhausted and having to rest. If I somehow overexert myself, I can just quickly rest on the couch without having the arcade.

This whole thing just makes me more appreciative of my boyfriend and my friends, if that's even possible. They went through all this trouble just to make sure I have a good birthday. I would have been find just playing video games with them, but they completely blew my expectations.

All I know is whatever I might face, I can count on them to make me feel better.
