chapter 7: weisz's grandma moves in

~weisz~

Padma sits down at the lunch table with her laptop, being the last one to arrive. "I made a rough design of the school dance, if you're all interested in seeing it."

Jessica furrows her eyebrows. "Already? But we just chose the theme yesterday."

"I know." Padma opens her laptop and turns it around so the rest of us can see what she thought of so far. "I stayed up most of the night working on it because of a sudden stroke of inspiration I had."

Padma wasn't lying yesterday when she says Road Block was giving her inspiration for the school dance. Looking at the design she generated, I can definitely see some of the diner in it, mainly by choosing the themed colours that are the same in Road Block.

There's one thing specifically that catches my attention. "Hey, you even got the jukebox in there."

"I told you, I got a lot of inspiration from the diner," Padma says. "I'll probably make a prop one, though, because there's no way we're going to be able to afford a real one just for the dance."

"Which diner?" Hal asks. "Because there's only one diner in town, and I'm pretty sure you actually wouldn't stop foot in there."

"You wouldn't step foot in there," Padma says. "I did, because I was hungry and it was the first place I saw on my way home from the appointment. Speaking of," she looks at me, "you were right. The onion rings were the best onion rings I've ever had."

       "Right?" I say.

"Don't tell me you've been there too," Neil says to me. "Dude, it's a dangerous place to go. I heard that they only hire criminals."

"You know I work there, right?" I ask.

Neil stares at me for a bit, trying to dissect whether or not I was telling the truth. "Dude. Why?"

I shrug, though I know well enough one of the main reasons why I applied to work there is because Reno works there. "I needed a job. They were hiring. Not much to there. It's a cool place to work."

"Right," Neil says, though the tone of his voice clearly indicates that he doesn't believe me. I don't care. Neil's opinions on the diner, and Reno, are probably too warped to change anytime soon.

"Just be careful when you work there," Jessica says to me. "I don't want anything bad to happen to you."

"I'll be fine," I assure. "All the customers there yesterday were really nice. Nothing bad is going to happen."

"If you say so," Jessica says, sounding identical to Neil with the tone of her voice.

"Anyway," Padma says, wanting to shift the subject into something else. "I never got any of your opinions on the design." She gestures to her laptop screen. "Of course, none of this is set in stone. These are just ideas that I had, but I'm not the only one on the dance committee, so I'm not going to make any final decisions without you guys."

Padma, somehow, is always able to change the subject when it comes to things I don't want to talk about. Recently, I've come to the conclusion that she's probably the type of person who doesn't care for rumours or chooses not to believe them. After all, she treated Reno like a normal human being yesterday and not like a gang member that all of our other friends seem to think he is.

Everyone seems to like Padma's ideas for the decorations. There are some suggestions here and there, so it's not like before they have a general sense of how they are going to decorate for the school dance. Padma even asks for my opinions, even though I'm not on the dance committee at all.
