KNOCKING SLIGHTLY ON the door, I waited for my mother to say 'come in'. Once I did, I opened the door and made sure no one was in there. I looked up at my mother who was sitting at the table with a stack of papers in front of her.

''Mom?'' I approched her. She didn't respond, she was so focused on the papers that she went through that she didn't hear me.

I walked up to her table and knocked on it a few times to get her attention. She snapped her head up at me and that's when I saw her red-swollen eyes.

''Mom? Are you okay?'' I pulled the chair behind me and sat down, resting my elbows on the armrests, and leaned into the chair, waiting for her to speak up.

She sighed, rubbing her face and then going through her hair with her right hand.

Chuckling, she shook her head in amusement which got me confused.

What is she laughing about?

''I don't know how he did it,'' she mumbled, holding up the papers that were laying spread on the table. ''But now I know,'' she chuckled. ''It never occurs to me to check them. I thought these were useless papers that show nothing but the past,''

''It was right in front of our noses. He was right in front of our noses,'' she looked at me, her face only showed sorrow. She covered her mouth with her hands and silently cried with her eyes closed. I quickly stood up, walked around the table, and lift her from her seat to wrap my arms around her shaking body.

''All this pain was for nothing, Axel. He was supposed to protect you all,''

''He was supposed to be a father to Lili,'' she cried into my chest.

I would never understand what she felt. Yes, my father 'died' and it destroyed me. But for a wife who thought the only person who understood her, loved her, helped her, saved her, died. It killed her.

Not just from the outside but also the inside. The sorrow was filled with a void. Her tears were all the memories she ever had with him.

''I'm sorry, Mom,'' I whispered against her forehead, pressing a tender kiss onto it.

She sniffed and pulled away. ''It's not your fault. You shouldn't be apologizing,'' she wiped her tears away and cleared her throat.

Since we found out that he was alive, I only had one question for my mother. ''Will you forgive him once you see him?'' she lowered her head, avoiding my eyes.

Whatever the answer to my question is, I will support her with whatever she decides is good for her. She's been through much to be just going around and forgiving and forgetting.
