Halloween, 1997
It was the noise that woke me from my bed more than anything else on the Halloween night that changed the course of my life forever. It was one sound: the screaming from Parvarti Patil.
I woke up with a shock, and so did the other girls in the girls dormitory in Gryffindor tower. Angelina Johnson was desperately trying to calm Parvarti down, and Ginny Weasley was trying to be a force for calm in the storm. We heard the commotion in the direction of the boys dormitory as well, and I rushed to get ready. As an extra precaution, I slipped my enchanted purple beaded bag into my right jeans pocket, and grabbed my wand last.
"What's going on, Gin'?" I asked Ginny.
"I don't know. Ask Parvarti."
I turned to Parvarti, and asked her what was wrong. She pointed out her window, and there it was in the night sky: the Dark Mark.
I put my hands on her shoulders and shook her gently but firmly, "Parv, you have to calm down. We're not Gryffindors for nothing. Do you understand me, girl?"
Angelina grinned, "She's right. Let's get down there and kick some snake eater's proverbial asses. Who's with me?"
Everyone got ready, but the first years were afraid. "Parvarti, stay with the first years, along with Lavender."
Lavender sneered, "Who put you in charge, Granger? If my Won Won is out there, I'm going too."
Ginny rolled her eyes. "Didn't Ron like break up with you?"
Lavender glared at her, her brown eyes blazing, "So what? He needs his Lav Lav, and that's that."
Ginny faked a cough, "Stalker alert."
"What was that, Easy Quaffle Hole?"
Ginny drew her wand, "Take it back, Miss Thirsty Pants."
I put myself in the middle of them. "Enough! Ginny, zip it. Lavender, maybe try not being so weird around Ronald. Whatever you two girls have going can wait until after the Voldy Moldy Cultists leave Hogwarts. Got it?"
The two witches glared at each other, but I was surprised by Lavender being the one to shake Ginny's hand first. "Fine. A truce, for now. But this doesn't change how much of a Quidditch slut you are, Weaslette."
Ginny's reply was more strained, "At least I don't thirst over wizards who don't want me. I'll work with you, but nothing has changed between us."
"Fine."
"Fine."I met up with Ron, and he asked, "Did you see the Dark Mark??"
"Yeah. Where's Harry?"
"With Dumbledore, I think."
"Oh. Do you know where he's at now?"Ron shook his head. "Nope, but we'll find him, don't worry, Mione.'"
We split up, and in the rest of the castle, things were thrown into complete disarray: debris everywhere, as well as stunned students and there were teachers fighting deatheaters left and right.
I noticed Professor Snape break away from the epicenter of the conflict: the astronomy tower, and Harry was following him, Draco Malfoy, and the main party of deatheaters.
I had to fend off four deatheaters, and six Slytherin students who sided with them to follow Harry and Snape. I knew that in order to apparate off the Hogwarts campus, Snape and his party had to reach Hogsmeade or the Forbidden Forest, and passing by Hagrid's hut was the direct path to Hogsmeade.
"You coward! He TRUSTED you!" Harry screamed at Professor Snape. "Face me, and fight, you pathetic coward. Sectemsempra!"
Harry used the full might of his power on Snape, but he flicked his wand in a non verbal protege charm that astounded me.
"Coward?! Coward!" Snape practically screamed at Harry as he flinched and suffered under his rebounded curse, "You dare to use my own spells against me, Potter? You who would dare to call me a coward when you are the son of a gutless, bullying swine?"
"I'll...kill...you..." Harry moaned.
Snape smirked, "No Potter, I think not. I will leave that to the Dark Lord."
I was so engrossed in their conversation that I didn't hear footsteps behind me until it was too late. "Ooo! Lookie here what I found! Another pretty for the harem!" A gruff voice belonging to a foul smelling beastly man said.
I tried moving, but he grabbed me about the waist, and was sniffing my hair like an animal...or dog, I couldn't be sure which.
Professor Snape's face retained his stoic expression, but he coolly ordered, "Un hand her, Fenrir. She is far more valuable alive than dead."
"It's true," Draco spoke up for the first time as Bellatrix Le Strange decided to burn Hagrid's hut to the ground and dance like a lunatic, laughing maniacally the whole time. "Granger isn't for the likes of you, Greyback."
Snape lifted my chin to meet his obsidian eyes. He stared at me coolly, and ordered, "She comes with us. Unhand her, Fenrir. Now."
Greyback looked ready to disobey, but then Snape did something legilimency related, and the werewolf growled, "Get the fuck outta my head, freako! Fine, fine, the girl's yer pet, I see. It's cute, really, you goin' soft over another mudblood, Snapey."
Snape lifted an eyebrow. "Test my resolve one more time wolf, and I will deal with you the way I dealt with your precious Lola."
Greyback shivered. "I...I get yer meanin,' Snape."
The twisted werewolf released me, and Bellatrix had stopped dancing to notice me. She giggled, "Awww, we've got us another newbie for the Claiming. I wonder who'll pop your tainted cherry, mudblood? Then again, who would take your ugly, skinny self? Certainly not any one...respectable that's for sure. But it'll be fun to see anyways. Nighty night, mudblood."
I felt something heavy hit the back of my head, and the next thing I remembered was that I was watching a whole crowd of masked deatheaters watch as an unknown witch was raped on Voldemort's orders for the amusement of the crowd over and over again...
