chapter twenty-four
ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE
"and for a moment i forget just how dark and cold it gets."Evelynn crawled through the vents with her eyes closed. Staring blankly at the silver abyss in front of her was too distracting and nerve-wracking, so she kept her eyes shut. She tried to envision the hallways she remembered from walking through the mountain, just hoping she was going the right way.
The metal was frigid against her bare skin, and her teeth started chattering. Being nervous always made her cold.
She took a deep breath and went further into the vents.
Evelynn couldn't tell how much time had passed, but she knew she had to be close by now.
She paused and opened her eyes. Panic hit as she realized that the vents split off into two different directions.
She held her breath, hoping to hear something. Any indication of which way to go.
And then she heard two gunshots that made her jump.
Not exactly what she was looking for, but she figured it probably had something to do with her people.
She crawled towards the left pathway, breath quickening. She could hear talking, but couldn't make out who the voices belonged to.
Evelynn heard more muffled talking as she found herself directly in the room now.
She peered out the slots of the vent in the wall. She saw the empty cages and bloodied extraction chair. With a tinge of pride, she realized that she made it to the right room, but she couldn't quite see who was inside.
"We need to go now. Make sure the coast is clear. I know somewhere safe."
Evelynn finally recognized that voice. It was Maya.
Adrenaline rushing, knowing she would be safe with Maya, Evelynn quickly turned and kicked the vent off it's hinges as fast as she could.
"Maya!" She shouted as she jumped down from the vent shaft, landing almost effortlessly on her feet.
Maya stood mouth agape at Evelynn's sudden appearance. But Evelynn's attention was quickly turned to the wide-eyed Fox at Maya's side.
"Oh my god," Evelynn ran to her, pulling her into a tight hug, "Fox, you're okay."
Fox hugged Evelynn back tightly, body still slightly shaking with fear, but her embrace loosened as nearby footsteps approached.
Fox slinked over to the right of Evelynn, rejoining Maya.
Evelynn was confused, but soon understood as a man dressed head to toe in Mountain Man beige emerged from behind the doorway.
The wind was knocked out of her chest as her gaze met those ever so familiar, deep eyes.
