Art Book #1

Avocado-Custom #1

I will be making three custom dragons for CrystalwingOC (check her out, her art and stories are absolutely incredible!!). They will be an Emeraldo, a Sapphire, and an Amburn. 

Here is the first one, the Emeraldo! 

Her name is Avocado, and I will list the colors over the chart. I'll fill out the rest of her details (including why her tail is so scarred) once I have the applyfic forms. :)

On with the show! 

Lineart! I used a 6B pencil for the entirety of this drawing, and my finger. The iPencil (I know that's not what it's called, it's just faster than saying 'Apple Pencil') is very much broken. I made her forehead steeper and her snout narrower than Jacaranda's, since I kind of messed up Jaca's anatomy. 

I think I'm getting better at talons! Look at them!! I'm really proud of her frill, too. It's super satisfying to me, especially the part on her neck. 

Next, the base color for her body. I chose a fresh olive green. This was very tiring. I try to NEVER use color fill, so I colored it all in by hand—and 6B pencil doesn't have the thickest lines. (The largest it goes is not much bigger than the size I used for the lineart.) I had to take a break after this, my finger was sore from rubbing up, down, round and round, hither and yon, all over the screen. 

And the base color for her frill! I picked a sort of greenish-taupe color. Heavy on the 'greenish', light on the taupe. I put this on a different layer from the body, in case I wanted to change it (in which case I would simply put it on alpha lock, which I couldn't do if they were on the same layer) and color it over with no heed for lines. 

And then comes the varying shades of her scales! This was very fun. I put it all on the same layer as the base color.

After that, the next step was the details—eyes and ears, horns, claws, and other protuberances (pronounced 'pro-tee-yew-burr-inses', but without the dashes), and scars. I thought a dark teally-grey would go well for her eyes to match her more subdued personality. Everything is on their own layer together, and the eyes on a separate one.

And lastly, her earrings and name. (She wears an earring in each ear, by the way.) Done!

And now for the color chart! Eyes, ears, horns, claws, and scars remain the same in all seasons.

Winter: Warm, brown-tinged shades of grey and taupe. 

Spring: Light olive hues and pale, warm, lime. 

Summer: Dark olive and bright green-taupe. 

Autumn: Rich, dusky, orange, deep reds, and dull orange-brown.
