(Quick little backstory: ravens usually denote evil in mythology, or death, or loneliness. So, a "Throne of Ravens", is essentially, a throne of death or evil. Monstercat fact of the day!)

The Raven Forest was their next obstacle. It was ruled by the raven king, King Blackwing. Monstercat's hope was that he could get Varien to convince Blackwing to let them pass through his forest. But if they had been corrupted, then things would end badly, and the hydra would know where they were heading. And that could potentially lead to the end of the real world.

The forest was a tangle of bracken(a kind of plant, not the awesome guy who makes music), dead trees, and bushes. Basically, your cliche horror forest. Monstercat could see plenty of ravens watching them from the treetops, and then flying back to report to their master. Hopefully, their meeting with the raven king would at least leave them alive.

Varien and his friends entered the clearing. The Raven King Blackwing was perched on his throne. Varien strode forward, and bowed to him, his long black robes concealing his body. "Greetings, King Blackwing. We seek passage through your realm." The king squawked his reply to Varien, who turned to Monstercat. "He says that he is willing to let us pass for a price."

Varien watched Monstercat consider his options, before turning back to Blackwing. "What would you have us give you?" The king in turn was silent, before sitting up again, and cawing again. Varien was about to translate it to his leader before he noticed something. The grass was withering around King Blackwing. Varien raised his scythe, and sliced the king in two. The corruption simply stitched him back together. The other ravens, also overtaken by the corruption, attacked.

Rootkit watched the black feathery cloud descend on them for half a second before he reacted and began firing. The ravens were everywhere, and they weren't small. King what-his-face was easily three times as big as Varien, one of the most imposing people in their group, and most of the rank-and-file ravens were somewhere between half that big and a quarter of that big.

Rootkit fired in bursts, trying to keep his gun from overheating, and to save ammo. He slowly backed away as the ravens got closer and closer, before dashing towards the forest. Rootkit watched as Monstercat gave a signale to back off, then counterattack. The strategy was simple: make someone think you're running away, then ambush(the next chapter(spoilers)) them. Ravens were known for their ferocity, but not their intelligence.

Laura's ankle still hadn't healed, but at least it was better. She crouched in the woods with several other, listening to the distorted caws of the ravens as they struggled to find their adversaries in their own woods. There were still occasional yells, as Rogue, Haywyre, PIXL, Stonebank and Danyka attempted to draw them away from the ambush. She saw Monstercat's hand go up.

Three....two....one.
