SETTING: Brooklyn, New York, modern day

Penelope Levine's father owes Brock Rumlow a huge debt after taking out a loan to try and save his family business, and now he has to pay up. The problem is, the only thing he has to offer is his daughter. Under threat of losing everything, Penelope's father offers her to Brock Rumlow in an arranged marriage that will secure the family business and keep the Levine family alive. Penelope is infuriated with her father, but agrees to the arrangement while she concocts an escape plan: kill Rumlow on their wedding night and live a life on the run.

The night before her wedding, she finds herself in Underworld, one of the most infamous nightclubs in New York. It's there that she meets James Barnes. Sparks fly immediately, and James quickly becomes infatuated with Penelope— so infatuated, in fact, that he hunts her down on her wedding day to take her as his own.

Little does Penelope know, she's in the middle of an all-out war between two of the most dangerous mobsters in New York.

And, slowly, she finds herself falling for the man who says he "saved" her.
