Prologue: A Daring Escape
An alarm blared, waking the kids in the cells, but not gaining any reaction other than slightly widened eyes. They stared blankly through the metal bars as they listened for anything over the sound of the red alarms. Then, they heard footfalls.
"Byakuran?" a small brunet no older than three grabbed the sleeve of a white haired child no older than four, "There's someone running this way." The kid wasn't startled. The younger had always had better senses than anyone he'd known, so there wasn't any surprise that he could tell whoever it was was running.
"Thanks for telling me, Tsunayoshi," Byakuran looked at the three year old as he cradled the two year old in his arms, "But what am I supposed to do with that information?" Tsunayoshi only looked down. He was just trying to be helpful. Then again, this was normal behaviour.
"Hurry up and get out!" Another kid's voice sounded from down the hall. It was being carried with the running footfalls. Tsunayoshi looked in that direction. Either he was the only one to hear the other child, or he was the only one to care. "Hurry!" Tsunayoshi didn't know what happened. All he knew was that that voice belonged to someone trustworthy. So, he stood up and moved to the door. One well placed kick with that weird orange stuff and the barred door was on the floor. That got some attention.
"What're you doing, Tsunayoshi?" Byakuran hissed, the child in his arms now crying silently. She knew the consequences of being loud. "You're going to get in trouble!"
Shaking his head 'no', the tiny brunet pointed to where he heard the voice again, "He said to escape, so that's what I'm doing. We can make it." His eyes gained a light in them that the four year old had never seen before, "I believe in him." Saying nothing else, Tsunayoshi broke down the doors of the other cells in the block as he and the other children made their way out of the building.
The upper floors of the laboratory were literally bloody messes. Most people would throw up anything they had in their stomachs at the sight. Unfortunately, these children had been in the labs for so long that they were desensitised to the sight. They continued to run through the bloody building barefoot. If it meant their freedom, they would do anything.
Finally, They made it out of the building and into the open area known vagule to the younger children as 'outside'. "It's so...white." one of them commented.
"Ne, ne!" one of the youngsters pulled on the sleeve of one of the olders, "What's this white stuff called?"
"Yeah!" another popped up, "It's cold, too!"
The children all gain looks of pure innocence as they gazed around curiously. Some of them had been in that laboratory from as young as two years old, and it broke the hearts of the Mafioso who had planned the attack that night. They didn't know there were children.
"Hey, kids." a man with yellow hair stepped up to the group of about twenty children. He kept his steps loud, his posture relaxed, and his voice warm as he spoke. Despite this, the older children - somewhere between eight and ten years old - placed themselves between this man and the younger children. "We're not gonna hurt you. My name is Iemitsu, and the people behind me are my friends. We're here to take you home."
Home. That was a word all of the children knew, but a thing they'd all given up on. A myth. The word resonated throughout all of their bodies and brought them all to tears. The oldest child that had made it out stepped forward with tears in her eyes, "You'll really take us home?" When the man nodded, she broke down and hugged his legs. The other children followed her and hugged each other. They were going home.
***
This was not a part of Tsunayoshi's plan. When they escaped, he thought he'd be taken home like that man promised, but Byakuran said that they'd be separated if he let that man take him, so, the three children were wandering around the streets of a weird place they'd heard someone call Italy. Tsunayoshi wasn't sure he liked it too much, but he didn't want to have to leave his brother and sister in all but blood.
