Chapter Five: Interclass Competition
Monday rolled around too quickly in Tsuna's opinion, and with it came the Interclass Competition. All classes in the school had been buzzing about it so much so that every final class period - the same class and teacher as homeroom for some reason - had been hijacked by the students as a planning period for the event. The teachers weren't too upset about it. After all, the winning class - students and teacher - got to go to Italy! Of course, there were a few technicalities, but no one ever reads the fine print.
Tsuna's class had decided on an Alice in Wonderland themed cafe for their project and had claimed the cafeteria as their area. Currently, they were setting up. Each student had been given a character to dress as and an assignment to fulfil while the cafe - and the entire school because of course it'd be open to the public! - was open for the three day time limit.
They had assigned characters a week ago, giving everyone ample time to get or put together costumes for it. Unfortunately, Tsuna was chosen as the Cheshire Cat. Normally this wouldn't be a problem. However, the Varia had decided to get him a costume the second they found out about the competition. They didn't know about the reward, though, because they'd cut him off and gotten to work before he could tell them. Shoichi - who was a lot more comfortable around the assassins than he had been a few days ago - just laughed from the sidelines.
Another problem that arose was the fact that Sawada Ieyasu - the Varia's target - and two of his Guardians were in the class with him. Gokudera Hayato and Yamamoto Takeshi had been given the roles of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Sawada Ieyasu was given the role of The March Hare, Dokuro Chrome - who had only transferred in about two weeks ago - was the Mad Hatter, Sasagawa Kyoko was Alice, Korukawa Hana was The Dormouse, and so on and so forth. The only one Tsuna hated more than his own was Nezu-sensei, who was dropped into participating as well, as the Jabberwocky. Actually, that one fits.
As last minute preparations were being done, Tsuna did his damn best to stay far away from the Vongola Candidate. It was an exceedingly hard task because of Reborn. The hitman had somehow gotten Tsuna mixed up with Sawada, Gokudera, Yamamoto, Dokuro and the others for the entire event. That meant that he had to work closer with them than he would have liked. Except maybe Chrome, but that's because she was as much of a people person as he was.
When the time came for the school to open for the public that Wednesday, the whole class showed up in costume and the assignments were reiterated. The catch was that everyone had to be in character. It was a good thing because the Cheshire Cat does whatever the hell he wants to, so Tsuna didn't say a word unless spoken to directly, and he made sure to stay out of people's way by only appearing sporadically. That was, until Shoichi and the Varia walked into the room halfway through.
Praying he was only imagining them, he turned to see the Vongola Candidate's reactions. The look of apprehension proved that Tsuna was not seeing things and that the group of Mafioso had, in fact, just walked in and were now sitting at one of the decorated tables in a corner. Quickly, before anyone else could approach the scary group, Tsuna took the initiative and walked over to talk to them.
"Hey, brat." Squalo greeted.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"Looking for something to eat, dear." Lussuria, ever polite, stated.
"I can see that, but why here?"
"What," Shoichi decided to tease, "You don't want us here?"
"Of course I-"
"Is everything alright?" Yamamoto asked, coming to stand beside Tsuna who clammed up entirely as someone he'd never intended to interact with walked up to him.
