14 missed calls from Everly.
A message flashed on Adam's phone when he got back home after dropping Maheen. He immediately called Everly back.
"Adam, where the hell have you been?" Everly spoke in a concerned yet a bit annoyed. It was very unlike Everly to sound or behave like, this but these days it seemed like her behavior had completely changed.
"Nowhere." Adam replied in a calm and collected manner.
"I have been calling you non-stop. Why didn't you pick my call up?" Everly continued in a loud tone.
Adam, still maintaining his calmness replied, "Oh, I was just strolling out in the garden, wanted some peace and quite." This was the first time Adam had ever lied to Everly, but he quickly realized that he had to do more of this in the coming future.
"I was worried sick about you!" Everly continued.
After a silence from Adam's end, Everly changed her mood and said, "So how was your debate competition? Did you guys win?"
"Yes! We did, we cam first amongst all the other schools." Adam said, reminiscing in the day that was spent, especially remembering Maheen.
"Oh wow that's so great! So finally you don't have to see that girl, Maheen anymore." Everly said in a bit of a manner similar to disgust.
Adam did not react, but he was pretty upset and on a verge of getting annoyed, because of how Everly spoke about Maheen. He understood that Everly is not particularly a big fan of Maheen, but she had no right to say ill things about her, especially now that she was his girlfriend. He really wanted to say something about it to Everly, but Maheen, the girl who made his heart beat faster, had unfortunately taken a promise from him. So he just kept quite and wished that Everly dropped the topic of Maheen.
"Anyways, not talking about her." Adam released a sigh of relief, and let Everly continue what she wanted to talk about. "So you have a match tomorrow?! All prepared?" Everly tried to stretch the conversation as much as she could, but she did not feel much of an inclination from Adam's side. She still held on.
"Yeah, I missed practice though but I am pretty sure we will have a good one." Adam replied and a silence lured.
"Okay, you seem a bit tired, I won't bother you. Sleep well. Good night!" Everly cut the phone and headed to bed, with an upset heart. She just could not figure out what was going on with Adam. Was it that he was really tired and unwilling to have a conversation, because he had been taking up a lot co-curricular activities. Or was it that the friendship was somehow deteriorating? Everly made peace with the former one and slept.
*********
Once again the stadium was filled with the roars and cheers for the West High School. The team without a doubt received incredible love and support from the whole school. Everyone looked forward to attending all of their matches, because frankly they were the best amongst all the school.
As the team prepared to go out into the field, Adam got a glimpse of somebody lurking in the corridor. He went to see who was it and to his very surprise, it was Maheen.
"What are you doing here?" He asked her as he grew closer.
"Nothing, I just came here to wish you all the best." Maheen kept her hand on his shoulder as he was quite close now. She raised her ankles to be on toes, as Adam was quite tall and gave a small peck on his lips. "And to do this." She continued as she flattened her feet on the ground.
Adam smiled and grabbed Maheen by her waist and held her again the corridor wall. He starred into her beautiful eyes and kissed her again. He then let go and and said, "Cheer for me in the stands, will you?"
