I was fully convinced that I was in shock.
I went to my room and pulled up a chair to sit in front of the largest window. I stayed there for quite some time, staring at... nothing. I only left that state when our assistant walked in.
"I thought you might be interested in something to eat..." she said, afraid of my reaction. "but I can take it back if you don't want it."
"Leave it." I said. I realized only then that, indeed, I was hungry. I couldn't remember the last time I'd had a meal.
In his nervous breakdown, Ron was right. Whatever there was between Cesar and I, it had to end.
"It's over." I said out loud while I ate a salad sandwich.
I stayed in my room for some time. Ron would pop in every now and then to see how I was doing, but soon after, he'd leave.
I didn't want to see anyone.
Days later, when I gathered some strength, I left the room and went, with a blanket, to the lounge chairs by the pool. I lay there for some time. I wasn't protesting; I didn't want to hurt anyone. I knew that this phase would pass, and I still had a lot to live for. And I think that's precisely why I was in no hurry. I would isolate myself for as long as it took until I felt strong again to face the world.
My thoughts were interrupted by DeeDee, who paid me a surprise visit.
"Now, this is a pool far from the house." She caught her breath. She sat across from me and asked. – How are you, my dear?
"I'll be ok."
"Now of that, I'm certain. You must never doubt that. Now how do we...." She looked around and soon found what she needed. The device to call someone to come and serve us.
"...now, my dear, have you thought about how you will get that woman out of your life?"
"I don't see how. Cesar and Shannon seem very close."
"Nonsense. You are his wife, period. We must think of something to drive her away at once."
"I appreciate you coming over, DeeDee. I do. But I don't think there is anything to be done."
"Of course there is. As soon as you're on your feet again, you should have a baby."
"But..."
"There is nothing more effective than having someone's baby in our circles. It's family. Now I know what happened and how painful these things are. Believe me. I've had enough miscarriages in my time."
"This is still a sensitive subject."
"I know."
Then our assistant came and sat with us.
"Did you ring?"
"I did. Could you get us some cocktails?"
"Sure thing. Anything else?"
"No, that would be all for the moment." - I replied, but she didn't move. Instead, she waited for a little bit, gathering her courage, and said:
"He's worried about you."
"As he should." DeeDee commented.
"If he asks... and only if he asks... tell him that I'm alive. Period"
"Hear hear!" She Vibrated DeeDee without knowing what it was about.
"Ok." Our assistant said, still worried. "I'll bring your cocktails soon."
