In the airport departure lounge, MaryAnne handed Joe a cell phone and recommended some films, all in the local language. Joe found the films a little heavy but didn't comment. Smiling, MaryAnne said, "They're your favorites."
Joe still didn't fully understand what was happening. He knew she wanted him to pretend to be someone else, but he thought it was just a fictional role. It was only when she showed him the photos that he realized, with horror, that she wanted him to pose as Chaos, her son.
MaryAnne showed some photos of Chaos, and Joe was struck by the resemblance to himself.
"Good times," MaryAnne remarked, her thoughts distant.
"But when..." Joe began to ask, but she hushed him with a "shhh," and he fell silent again.
Who was that man? From the photos, he could tell they were taken the previous year. Had he been in a coma this entire time? Did he have amnesia from that life? How could he explain the existence of someone who looked so much like him?
They traveled to a country in the Middle East. Joe silently followed MaryAnne everywhere, never understanding a single word the locals were saying. They went to a huge, old house, where she announced, "Welcome back, Chaos. Try not to scare the employees too much." She then left for one of the rooms.
Joe stood there, trying to take it all in. If MaryAnne wanted him to pretend to be someone else, maybe he should go along with it, at least until he had a clearer understanding of everything.
An unsuspecting maid entered the hall, saw him, looked terrified, and ran back the way she had come. Joe realized he would have to figure everything out on his own.
It didn't take long for him to discover "his" room. It was horrible, filled with signs of a violent person, but in that mess, he managed to find himself. It was as if he was inside the worst version of himself. If this was all MaryAnne hoped for, it would be easy to act. Especially now, as he felt a growing hatred for everything and everyone.
Joe sat on his bed and decided to continue with the insanity. He would be exactly who MaryAnne wanted him to be. That way, he would have time to think about Lilian and what to do about their marriage.
Joe soon understood the rhythm of the house. At breakfast the next day, MaryAnne said, "Why don't you go see your friends?"
Joe didn't respond because he understood it wasn't a question. After breakfast, he got ready as Chaos would and left.
He walked around the unfamiliar city, trying to get a sense of where Chaos might have gone. It didn't take long until someone shouted in his direction.
He looked up to see an excited man approaching. The man hugged him and spoke in his language, which Joe didn't understand. Trying to escape the situation, Joe made a disgusted face and attempted to leave. The man persisted, but Joe wanted to get away. Finally, the man let him go, shouting something behind him. After that, Joe took a quick walk around the market and then returned home.
