It's him

Jase insisted that we return to the apartment next door to assess the actual living conditions there. He was still excited about the idea and didn't understand my refusal. I preferred not to explain more than I had already said: that vibe brought back bad memories.

Cesar lived with Veronica for years in an apartment very much like this one. At the time, I only saw him as a friend, but even so, the emotional baggage was too great. I couldn't stand the constant comparisons. Every moment something reminded me of him. Every minute there generated a whirlwind of memories of Cesar.

Jase didn't give up easily. He walked around the apartment, pointing out every detail as if it were the most brilliant thing in the world. This poster-boy side of him was cute, and I joined in on the fun.

Our tour was interrupted by the old elevator noise (again, just like Cesar's old apartment). It was impossible to see directly from where we were, so we waited. The excessive noise of the sliding door, the slam of the latch, and a few steps later... Chaos.

He timidly entered the flat, trying not to make a big deal out of it. Finally, he appeared to have come in peace. Jase watched him, studying his movements.

"Hello," he said.

"Hey," I replied.

"I'll give you guys some privacy," Jase said, going to the other room.

I found Jase's attitude a little strange. Isn't Chaos, by definition, a threat? So how could my guardian leave me alone with a man like that?

"Can we talk?" Chaos asked.

Understanding that, based on his question, this would not be a quick subject, I went to one of the armchairs to get comfortable. He followed me and sat on one of the sofas.

"What's up?" I asked, confronting him.

He smirked awkwardly and lowered his head, embarrassed.

"I think... now that Cesar is gone, we don't have to hide anymore."

"Hide what?"

"That we're married."

It took me some time to muster the courage to continue, but then I quoted what would sum up the entire situation.

"Till death do us part."

I saw his eyes water up.

"I killed myself, Lillian. I was clearly not okay. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"

"That I couldn't make you happy, yes, it does" I said, and it was my turn to fill my eyes with tears.

So I forced myself to remember that this was Chaos, not Joe. I searched for memories of his mocking gaze in the desert and decided I'd let myself take too long in that theater.

"Why do you want me so much?" I asked Chaos directly.

"What?" he asked, visibly confused.

"Is my energy that important to you? I don't know if it will make you fertile if that's what you expect."

Noticing my change in tone, he took a deep breath and called Jase, who returned shortly.

"Show her," Chaos asked.

Jase thought for a few seconds and took a few steps to stand beside him.

"What I'm going to show you will scare you a little, but I assure you it's okay."

"What?"

Jase looked at Chaos, and when I followed his gaze, I got such a shock that I jumped in the chair.
