Mr. Innis

I was walking through the living room when I noticed a man I didn't recognize sitting on the couch. Given how often our house was full of people and how many friends Cesar had (not to mention all our guests), I wasn't too surprised. I was about to walk past him, but something about him seemed like he was waiting for me.

"Hello?" I said.

Our assistant quickly arrived. "Here you go, Mr. Innis. Cinnamon tea." She seemed so worried that she didn't even notice I was there.

"Hello," he replied with a smile. Only then did she notice me.

"Oh, Lilly! Mr. Innis was waiting for you. He didn't want to interrupt your conversation with Cesar."

"Should I go fetch him?"

"No, young mother. I'm here for you."

"Mother?" I questioned. I hadn't sensed his presence as an immortal, but I was beginning to feel it now. It was strong, like he was someone powerful. Sensing the same thing, Cesar rushed into the room, out of breath.

"Igor!" he exclaimed when he saw the man sitting there.

Our guest, who had followed closely behind Cesar, was also surprised. "Mr. Innis!" He went up to greet him. "It's a great honor, sir."

"Could you give us a moment? I need to speak alone with Lilly and Cesar."

"Certainly, sir."

Everyone left the room, leaving just the three of us. The man began to speak.

"The mother needs protection..."

"Sir, I've done my best to—" Cesar started, but the man continued.

"...from you."

A silence fell over the room. We heard a lively conversation outside, and Mr. Innis spoke loudly, "Let him pass."

The door opened, and a waiter/call boy entered, standing respectfully beside Mr. Innis.

"Mother, this is your new guardian. He will be by your side from now on."

"With all due respect..." Cesar began, but Mr. Innis interrupted again.

"Congratulations are in order. You are finally free. The mother will be safeguarded, and I believe Jase won't mind the assignment."

"...but he's not even..."

"He will be, when the time comes. Now, I believe my time here is done. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your evening." He then approached me. "And, my mother, it was a pleasure to finally meet you face to face. You are truly an extraordinary creature."

He kissed my hand and left.
