"You goddamn bitch...", you hissed and let yourself fall against the edge of the table as soon as the door of the back room fell shut. "What were you thinking?! At what point did you look at his and my history and thought this was a good idea? I thought you were smart."
"And I thought you were a professional.", Adler lit himself a cigarette. "You two have a job to do. You do the job. You go separate ways after. Is it that hard?"
An annoyed growl escaped you. You threw your head back in an attempt to not loose your temper.
But he was seriously testing your nerves in that moment.
"I know you have no idea how it is to be in love, but even you should know that working with the ones you hate isn't all that easy.", you tried to explain in a calm manner.
Adler shrugged.
"Just avoid him.", he said.
You laughed.
"Avoid him? Yeah, sure, do you tell people with cancer to just avoid it as well?"
"That's an odd comparison."
You groaned.
"Fine, let me phrase it different...", you bared your teeth. "He is my Perseus. Now tell me, Russell, would you be thrilled to work with Perseus? What? No? Shocking."
Sighing, Adler put out the cigarette and rubbed his face.
"Listen, I know this is a difficult task.", he tried to make amends.
You shook your head, arms crossed in front of your chest.
"You don't seem to understand the issue at hand, Rusty.", you growled and pulled a face. "I'm not mad that he's here. I'm mad that you little bitch lured me here without a warning. You didn't even give me the option to consider. And then you tried to keep us apart like cats and dogs? You wanted to make a fool of me."
"The same would apply to Woods."
"Woods IS a fool. Difference is, he doesn't mind. But I'm not willing to be the clown of your circus. You're hiding something else? We've got a brainwashed Russian, my ex boyfriend, the fucking MI6. Anything more I need to know? Aliens, maybe?"
Rubbing his forehead, Adler let out a deep breath. His patience was running thin as well.
But he needed your abilities and you knew that all too well.
"I needed you for this mission.", he looked at you from the brim of his glasses. "There was no other for the role."
A loud laugh made your chest shake.
"Oh! And let me guess, he was the only one for his role?", you did a gesture as if this was the biggest joke you've ever heard.
Adler nodded.
"There's no other like Woods. He is a solider who's willing to sacrifice a lot for his country."
Snorting, you shook your head.
"He's the only one stupid enough to fight against a Russian army all by himself, only armed with a knife. He isn't a good soldier, he's a brainless kamikaze.", with narrowed eyes, you leaned forward. "Is that what you need, Russell? A sacrifice?"
His lips pressed into a thin line.
"Careful.", he flashed you a satisfied smirk. "This makes you sound like you're worried rather than pissed."
Annoyed, you hit the table. As your fist met the hard tabletop, a sharp pain chased through your knuckles.
"Don't you fucking test me!", you threatened with a warning shimmer in your (E/C) eyes. "Keep him as far away as possible from me and I'll do my job. But I warn you, that vacation better be fucking long and well paid. Are we clear?"
For a moment, Adler thought.
"Is that the only way to keep you with us?", he asked, eyebrows raised in an expectant manner.
A broad grin appeared on your lips, followed by an expression in your eyes that made you look like a maniac.
At the sight, Adler tensed.
"That's the only way that keeps me from slicing your throat right here, right now, Russell Adler.", you took a step towards him to give his chest a push. "But remember, I'm not a good person to fuck with. I've got too much bullshit to deal with. If you're wise, you won't be the final drop that breaks the camels back."
With a low growl stuck in your throat, you pushed past him, but didn't let the opportunity slide to bump into his shoulder with yours.
Displeased, he let out a low breath and shook his head. But his hand jumped forward and held you back by the wrist.
Warning, you glanced at him.
"What?", you asked, audibly and visibly out of patience.
Adler took a deep breath in.
"Bell.", he said and looked at you from the corner of his eyes. "You told him about your job?"
A grin appeared on your face. You freed yourself from his grip with a harsh movement.
"I told him I make people talk even if they don't want to."
"So you're an interrogation expert now, huh?"
"I am what I need to be to finish this mission. And you know me. I like making people sympathies to convince them of our opinion."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Our opinion?", he asked.
You let out a huff.
"America's opinion. In the end, it doesn't matter if he believes I torture or manipulate people. All he has to do is trust me at some point and he'll be on our side long enough to do the right thing. Isn't that what you want, Adler? His trust?"
He frowned.
"I want his information."
Now, you couldn't help but laugh.
"You really don't know anything about people, do you?", you crossed your arms in front of your chest. "People that trust, are people who talk. I'm not an expert in torture, but I do know how to make people over share. Trust me when I say, he needs to become our friend before he'll open his mouth."
"What about the brainwash then? Was it worthless?"
"No. It'll buy us time. He thinks we're allies. Without the brainwash, he would have never set foot near us. Now it's time to make him talk, not obey."
"I'd prefer if he obeys and talks when requested."
You smirked.
"That's why I'm the manipulator and not you. I'll handle Bell. You handle Woods. That's the deal.", you glared at him. "Don't fuck it up."
