The Woodsman

Deep within the forest's glen.

With canopy dense and thick.

A shaft of light pierces through.

Like the Devil's walking stick.

It shines on an old man's cabin

Where his life has been spent

Bent with age he watches keen.

As yet another sign has been sent.

Another ominous warning

Causes the woodsman to despair.

Like dark clouds predict the rain.

These signs portend change in the air.

The wild roses bloomed early.

Now they struggle to survive.

The creeks and springs are drying up.

Summer rains are late to arrive.

The deer are moving higher

Up the mountain slopes.

The grass is as dry as tinder.

Beetles are destroying all the oaks.

There is an ominous silence

As the birds have taken wing.

They have left their summer home.

No longer can you hear them sing.

Fire's danger has never been so great.

One spark from a lightning flash

Can cause carnage to his forest home.

Quickly turning all his life to ash.

Yes, calamity is approaching.

Nature's harmony is out of tune.

This the woodsman knows.

He just hopes and prays the end is not too soon.
