He had a stack of twenties
On his desk - three inches high.
I asked why he kept so much cash.
Though I expected the usual lie.
He said he liked
Giving them away.
To whomever is honest and nice.
Replying, I asked "How many today?"
"None" was his answer.
"They've sat for a very long time.
The last one I gave to an elderly man.
Who spoke softly, always in rhyme."
"I figured he was a poet.
They say what they feel
Honest, truthful and kind.
Their thoughts are so real."
We finished our business
And I bid him adieu.
Then he gave me a twenty.
Saying, "This is for you".
He said, "You might not be a poet.
But you are honest and kind.
These sorts of people
Are getting much harder to find."
