"Stop staring at her like that freaks." I whisper scold the boys who are all staring nervously at Max in the corner but they don't listen.
"I know you're staring at me..." the redhead announces over her shoulder after a couple minutes and the boys all look away, trying to act natural after getting caught.
"What? Sorry I thought you needed something..." Lucas says guiltily and Steve picks up a baseball to toss in the air.
"We're just hangin out." The older boy says nonchalantly, and I roll my eyes at them as I continue to look through some old newspapers.
"You think your eyes boring into the back of my head is protecting me from Vecna? I don't know." She stands in front of them as they all avoid eye contact in fear of getting yelled at again.
"You can look at me now."
"Thank you, sorry." They go back to looking over at her and Max throws me an 'over it' look as I chuckle at their idiocy.
"For you..." she hands me a letter and I take it softly, looking down at the neat handwriting on the front saying "for Dylan."
"Hey, hey! What're you doing? That's not for now, don't open it now." Max scolds as she passes out more letters and Dustin immediately tries to open it.
"Okay! I'm sorry what is this?"
"It's uhm... it's a fail safe for after. Y'know, if things don't work out."
"Wait, woah Max. Things are gunna work out!"
"No! No, I don't need you to reassure me right now and tell me that it's all gunna work out because people have been telling me that my entire life and it's almost never true!"
"It's never true. I mean of course this asshole curses me, I should've seen that one coming." Max exclaims bitterly, trying to hold back her tears.
"Hey, don't say that. You don't deserve this at all, please stop blaming yourself." I tell her, standing up and putting my arm on her back comfortingly.
She nods sadly, stepping away from my touch and heading to the table where Dustin's walkie is.
"If we go to east Hawkins will this thing still reach Pennhurst?" Max asks secretively and Steve looks at her suspiciously.
"Of course." My brother says confidently and Max picks it up, handing it to me.
"Wait, why're we talking about East Hawkins?" Steve speaks up, confused yet again.
"Will you come with me?" Max looks up at me pleadingly and I nod in understanding.
"Of course." I tell her softly, happy that she came to me for help.
"No, no, no!" Steve protests firmly, finally understanding what Max wants to do.
"Max, Dylan! Seriously. I'm not joking okay? I'm not driving you anywhere!" Steve follows close behind us as we head outside towards Steve's car.
