As the group takes on the long walk through the upside down towards Nancy's house, I notice Eddie trailing behind looking a bit worn out.
"Hey, how are you holding up?" I ask softly, slowing down to walk next to him.
"I'm freaking out on the inside but I'll get over it eventually." He tells me with a reassuring smile and I chuckle at the comment.
"You survived your first monster fight though, congrats." I bump my shoulder with his and he chuckles, looking down at his shoes as I smile over at him supportively.
"Not sure that's a thing I should be celebrating, but thanks." He tells me with a shake of his head and I shrug, not really knowing what to tell him. This definitely must be a shock to the system for someone who's never been in an adventure to save the world before.
"You know... Dustin told me you were a badass. Insisted on the matter in fact. That kid loves you so damn much. It's kinda annoying to be honest." He chuckles to himself and I smile softly, thinking about just a couple days ago when life was normal and I hated Eddie's guts.
"I couldn't believe that Dylan Henderson, the girl in my chem class who's always listening to music on her Walkman and getting straight A's on every assignment, was a badass." He says dramatically as I snort in amusement.
"Is it really that hard to believe? I'm so cool at school." I joke playfully, and he just pushes his shoulder against mine childishly.
"Truth is, outside of dnd I am no hero. I see danger and I just turn heel and run, or at least that's what I've learnt about myself this week." He tells me with a self deprecating smile and I frown at how hard he's being on himself.
"Don't say that..." I try to reason but he cuts me off before I can say anything.
"No, the only reason I came here is because you did it with me. I just wanted to be as strong as you were, with your knife and your kickass additude." He stops walking as he looks down at me with an admiring look and I look back at him softly.
"Hey, I've been doing this kinda shit for a long time, and I mean a long time. So it's normal for me to be in life or death situations. You just got dragged into this mess like five days ago. Please cut yourself some slack here...." I tell him reassuringly and he just shakes his head stubbornly in resistance. He goes to start walking again but I grab his hand to make him face me.
"Do you know what you said to the party when everyone was downed and me and Dustin only had twelve hit points left?" I ask with a small smirk and he looks at me with his eyebrow furrowed.
"Remind me?" He looks down at me curiously, still holding onto my hand.
"There is no shame in running, so don't try to be a hero. Not today, okay?" I tell him and he smiles softly, remembering our dnd session together.
