Once I made it back to the party, The guys didn't even seem to notice I had left. They were too busy trying to get girls.
I thought I was in the clear until Mel approached me. I had honestly forgotten she was here...
"I heard you drove Auburn home, is she alright?" Mel asks, a look of worry on her face.
"Yeah some fight with her boyfriend or something." I say, keeping it minimal as I'm not sure what all Auburn had told her or if she wanted her to know too.
"Of course, he's a a dick. I keep telling her to break up with him but she won't. It's dumb if you ask me." Mel says as she shifts from one foot to the other.
"Very dumb." I say and Mel stares at me for a moment before she looks around.
"Do you want to sit outside and maybe talk or something?" Mel then asks and to say that shocked me was an understatement.
I looked over at the guys who still seemed lost in their game to get girls so I shrugged.
"Sure, why not." With that, I followed Mel outside where there was significantly less people and was way quieter.
We took a seat on the porch swing, the wind brushing against my bare hands causing me to retract them into my jacket.
It was pretty damn cold outside right now and I was surprised she wanted to sit out here seeing as she wasn't wearing very much.
"So what exactly happened with the two of them? I'm sure Auburn will tell me later but I'm curious now." Mel says as she swings her feet back and forth.
Knowing how close the two of them were, I'm sure Auburn would mention it so I didn't feel so bad bringing it up. So I told her exactly what I saw.
Mel scoffed as she stared out in front of her. "I'm not surprised at all. He always tries to make her feel insecure but it's actually just him flipping his insecurities on her. Obviously, Auburn is hot. He knows she's too good for him."
Knowing it would be weird if I straight up agreed, I simply nodded
"She made you promise not to tell her brother huh?" Mel asks then and I looked over at her, surprised she had guessed that.
"Yup. He's my best friend though so it would be kinda messed up not to mention it." I say as I lean back against the swing, the movement rocking us backwards.
"Do whatever you feel is best. I'm sure she won't actually get mad if you tell him. Besides, she already knows Mark is an asshole, she just doesn't want people to know she knows." Mel laughs.
I don't say anything as we swing gently, the cold air around us making me shiver slightly.
I glanced over at Mel to notice her shivering as well. Suddenly, I stand up. "Need a ride home?"
Mel looks up at me for a moment before she smiles slightly and nods, "Yeah, thanks."
This time, I inform the guys I'm heading home after I give Mel a ride and they tell me they'll catch a ride with someone else and that it's all good.
On the car ride to Mel's place we don't talk much. The occasional exchange of words but nothing too crazy. Again, I didn't know Mel like that. I just knew she was one of Auburn's best friends.
Which is funny considering I've had longer conversations with Mel then I've ever had with Auburn.
When we pulled up to Mel's house, she turned to me and smiled. "Thanks for the ride, I appreciate it. See you around." She says before she gets out of the car and heads inside.
Once she's indoors, I pull off and make my way home.
I was honestly exhausted and I hadn't even really done much. Being around people was just exhausting.
Although the party was somewhat fun and it would have been cool to stay, I just wasn't feeling it.
I would much rather go home and sleep. I would take that over partying any day.
Upon getting home, I slipped off my jacket and threw it on the chair in my room before I plopped down on my bed.
I then pulled out my phone and cycled through apps, trying to relax and unwind before bed.
Snapchat was full of the guys all posting stories of the party. Instagram was the same shit too.
Knowing that wouldn't be any fun, I just put on some music and stared up at the ceiling thinking back to the party and what Mel had said.
It amazed me that she said Auburn thought Mark was an asshole yet she stayed with him. Even though he treats her awful and always makes her feel like she doesn't matter.
For as long as I've known the two of them together, Mark has always put her down and made her feel shitty. I didn't like that.
Auburn is definitely way too kind and beautiful to be treated how he treats her.
It's crazy that even though she knows that, she just lets it happen. I would never understand that. It made no sense.
Love really is blinding.
