The plan

Y/n's POV

I can't help staring outside the rest stop. Fire is blazing everywhere, and everything is destroyed. How did this happen? I knew we were close to the robot apocalypse, but not this close. A hand slips into both of mine, snapping me out of my daze. I look to my sides to see Aaron and Katie holding them while offering me a smile.

In return, I give a weak smile, glad they're here to comfort me. A buzz reaches our ears, and Katie gasp. "Oh my gosh. Maybe it's our friends." She pulls out her phone, and we all huddle around her. "Congratulation, devices. The last human has been captured. Wi-fi has been restored." The announcement says. "We're the last people left?" I ask, my voice going weak by the thought.

A message from Jade pops up, and Katie opens it. The video shows the college being attacked. Jade is hiding behind a car and is holding the camera close to her face. "They're taking everyone. Katie, y/n, are you guys out there? Please." A beam hits the girl, and she's shoved into a pod.

"It's gonna be okay," Mom tells me, pulling us close to her. "Everything's gonna be...fine." She tries to comfort us. My hold tightens as much as my throat is right now.

"Everything WILL be fine," Dad speaks up. Making the rest of us turn to him. "Because I have a plan." We all look to Dad, wondering what he might be saying. "Okay, the first thing is, you're going to have to hand over your devices." He softly tells us, holding out his hands towards us.

I pull out my phone, save my cloud memory and hold my hand. "Marker," I demand, and Katie pulls a sharpie out and smacks it on my hand. I pull the cap off with my teeth and jot down the set. "Done." I pipe and put it in Dad's hand.

"Thank you, sweetie." He smiles at me before turning to the others, who are more reluctant to give up their electronics. Dad slips them carefully out of their hands while talking. "I'll give them right back. I'm just going to turn it off permanently!" He shouts happily and proceeds to throw the phones on the floor and stomp on them.

"What, DAD!" Katie screams in dismay. "This is necessary, so they can't track us," Dad explains as he practically dances on the phone. "Trust me, this is causing me no joy! Haha, this hurts me more than it hurts you!" He laughs happily.

After the phones turn into tiny pieces, Dad scoops them up and walks over to us. "And, as promised, your phone." He says proudly while pouring it into Aaron's hands, who smiles and says, "Thank you, Father."

Dad makes his way over to the window and reaches into his jacket. "Next, did everyone bring your personalized number 3 Robertson head non-slip screwdriver?" He asks and pulls out his.

Mom rolls her eyes. "How could I forget my anniversary present?" She says sarcastically. Katie and I pull out ours. "Or our sweet 16 gifts." We both say in sync. "Or what the tooth fairy left under my pillow." Arron joins happily, not catching the sass from us girls. Dad holds his screwdriver like a sword and proclaims, "Then barricade away!"

After a bit, we screwed the boards to the window. Dad looks at the work done proudly. "Next, we-" He goes to say, but Katie jumps in, her notebook wide open for us to see. "Enact Katie's dope plan! First, we use robot parts to disguise ourselves as the enemy. Then we assassinate the leader with some kill code, make a necklace out of robot fingers Mad Max style, and become world-saving, apocalyptic road warriors." She rants off.

"Katie, Katie, Katie, this isn't a movie. We don't have a kill code." Dad tells Katie, pointing out one of the apparent flaws. "We don't have a kill code yet," Katie says optimistically. Dad laughs and pulls us all in a hug. "Come on, kid. Look, look, we're safe, and we're together."

Aaron lights up and holds up Monchi. "Ooh, can Monchi be our guard dog?" He asks hopefully. Dad slowly gets on one knee and holds Aaron's shoulder. "Son, I love the dog. You love the dog. We all love the dog." He says while looking around. "But you're going to have to be prepared to eat the dog."

Mom, Katie, and I immediately grabbed anything we could around us to throw at Dad while we yelled at him. "That is not something you tell a kid!" I bark, making my scariest face. Dad shrinks at this. "Okay, okay. Sorry. Misread the room on that one." He confesses with an uneasy look.

"Have you ever seen a movie where the heroes just give up?" Katie asks, trying to encourage Dad. "What if the Ghostbusters said, 'Let's hide underground, eat some dog. Let the ghosts destroy New York.'"

"Kid, I'm sorry, but it's not open for discussion," Dad says firmly. Katie looks over to Mom, who looks sorry. "Your dad and I agree on this one." Her eyes hold sadness yet determination.

Katie's shoulder slumps in defeat, and Dad claps his hands together. "All right, everybody, let's keep barricading. Aaron, you get the south wall. Katie, you get the west." Dad gives out commands, but Katie silently slips out of an open window.

Once she's gone, I groan. "What do I do, Mom? We can't stay here forever. We'll get caught if we stay here. Going out there, we'll be hurt, no doubt. Is there a compromise we can agree on?" I ask desperately. Mom bites her nail, showing she's not sure about this, either. "Right now, Katie needs some comfort. And I'm sure this is taking a toll on you.  You two go be there for each other."

With a sigh, I nod and go after my girlfriend, taking Monchi with me. Once outside, I walk over to the side of the building to the ladder. Once I reach the top, I see Katie hunched over, her head burrowing into her arms.

"You doing okay?" I ask before cringing. That was a stupid question. "I've been better. You?" She huffs out. "Yeah, same here." I rub the back of my neck. An idea pops into my head and I sit beside her. I pull Monchi onto my lap and prepare my voice. "Uh-oh, Monchi, coming at ya." I start, making Katie watch me. I make my voice go higher and make the adorable dog's mouth follow what I'm saying. "Katie~, you can't resist me, girl." A small laugh slips from my girlfriend's lips, but her smile falls right after.

"I just can't believe this. The end of the world before our future started. And Dad...he doesn't care!" She sighs and pulls me into a hug.

3rd POV

"I care so much about those two, but else can I do, Lin?" Rick asks. "Katie doesn't even see how hard I'm... how hard I'm-" He groans as he fails to screw in a nail on a board. He sighs and sinks into some cinderblocks behind him. "I'd do anything for those two. I just- I just don't want to see them hurt."

Lin approaches Rick rubs his shoulder. "Well, getting hurt is part of life, hon." She finally gets in front of him and lowers herself to his level. "Just have to try to understand where Katie is coming from."

Back to you

"Understand where he's coming from?" Katie asks, a knowing smile forming on her lips. "You're sounding like Mom." I snort and hold her hand. "Well, Mom is the best at going to for advice. And I think you should try it." I tell her.

Katie stares into my eyes for a moment for a moment and then sighs. "Maybe." She admits. She pulls out her notebook with the plan and rips out the front page. "This was so stupid." She mutters. "Catch, Monch." She orders and tosses the crumpled paper. The dog tries to catch the object, but it bounces off his head and off the roof.

Katie and I stay silent, upset about the things going on around us. But a voice in the distance grabs our attention right awat. "Brother, what is this?
