Izzy took a deep breath as she watched Hobi explore ideas. They had jumped from the recital to the Dandy project to dozens of ideas between.
The passion rising in him took her breath away. He was lost in the creation of something new. She had forgotten how much she loved to watch him mold beauty from the ordinary.
Whether it was a doodle she had drawn while bored in class or a stumbled step he had made to avoid a puddle, he had a gift to twist things and refine them and make it art. She had missed him more than she knew.
For his part Hobi’s mind was racing with possibilities. It had been years since he felt this rush of creativity.
He spilled his ideas as they came to him, then he refined or discarded bits as Izzy reacted, her ideas melding into his own. His heart thumped harder as he looked at her.
This. He had missed this. He had never felt a connection like this with anyone else. She fired him in ways he did not understand. He simply knew he was better with her.
The ideas and conversations ebbed and flowed as the day wore on.
They stopped for snacks from street vendors as they wandered the neighborhood. Sometimes they grew quite and would walk in contented silence. Then, before there could be any awkwardness one or the other would start again with an idea or a memory sparked by something they saw or heard.
Before they were ready the sun gave up it’s hold in the sky and slowly sunk into the horizon. As they had done countless times before, they found a quiet spot and sat to wait and welcome the stars.
They sat next to each other, not consciously aware of how they bent toward one another or the brief touches that punctuated the conversation
Once the stars became visible Izzy checked the time and let out a squeak of surprise.
Hobi looked at her, solemn now, worried almost.
“ Is it late? Do you have to go?” he asked. He made no effort to conceal his worry and disappointment. He was unwilling and unready to let go of the day.
She watched his face, felt his eyes searching hers, the question unspoken between them.
“ It is late,” she agreed.
She rushed on before she lost her nerve, “ And I was hoping… I thought……” a deep breath and she continued “ I was wondering on my way here this morning if you had a favorite pizza joint and hoping you would take me there. I thinking of all the time we spent at Max’s, remembering…..”
She did not finish. She knew her face was flaming. Even she could hear the shake in her voice. She looked in his eyes, panic beginning to dawn as she realized what that sounded like. What was she thinking?
Hobi looked at her through his dark lashes. He swallowed, and then again, warning himself not to get his hopes up.
Her face was flushed and he watched as her eyes darkened.
Did she want to revisit those memories? Was she even now regretting her words. He watched as she took a step away and turned her head, shielding her thoughts from him.
