Izzy listened to his question, but really she was just watching his face. There was the faintest blush on his cheeks and his dark eyes were sparking.  She noticed his voice was a bit breather than normal, like he had to remind himself to breath.  She noted those things because they were true of herself as well.

“ Yes,” she said before she could back out.  She could tell by his quick breath that he was surprised, as surprised at himself for asking as he was at her answer.

“ Yes Hobi,” she repeated, shutting off all her doubts and questions.  This was simply two friends sharing a meal, there was no need to complicate the matter.

“ Yes!” he repeated, his voice ringing in one of the voices he used to get her to smile.  Oh how she had missed that.

He told her to stay in line and he quickly moved to the stand and spoke to the waiter there.  She could tell from where she stood that he was a regular and obviously well respected.  He was back in a very short time, smiling and pulling her out of line.

“ Done!” he exclaimed. “ I got the special so it should not take long. The store is this way.”

He guided her down the streets and pointed out points of interests, where he shopped, the bookstore that he loved to browse.

Izzy felt emotional as she listened.  This man had changed and matured so much that in some ways he was a stranger.

But then he would mention that one of his dance students’ parents owned this store or that was the animal clinic where he volunteered some weekends.

She knew him.  She knew things about him without him saying.

He shopped at that store to make sure the parents were doing well and to encourage their young Dancer.

She would bet there was a dog at that clinic that he had his heart set on taking home. Some things were never changing and this man’s kind heart and gentle spirit were touchstones she could count on.

They arrived at the store and she saw why he had suggested it.  It had a small food and dessert section and a wide selection of foreign and domestic wines and liquors.

He picked soju he wanted her to try and she picked the wine they had used for special occasions at school.

They both laughed at what they had thought was “quality” vintage back then.

“ Should we?” she asked, embarrassed for the not yet adults they had been.

“ Absolutely,” he laughed, “ but just in case.”

He reached over her head for an excellent and expensive wine, one in which she had rarely indulged.

She shivered again at the nearness of his body behind her and her awareness that he was no longer that boy but a man, sophisticated and worldly.
