There are no such things as monsters.
Vampires, witches, and werewolves are always depicted as villains who seek to harm pure and innocent people for their own selfish and evil purposes. Yet, there is always the hero in the story; someone willing to sacrifice even their life to vanquish the villain and save the world. And then comes the ‘Happily ever After,’ where everyone is safe and sound.
But... is it always like that?
Is it always the villain who embodies true evil? Were the villains wicked from the start, or perhaps... was it their life that shaped them into what they became? Conversely, are the heroes truly as virtuous as they seem? What if, behind the masquerade of kindness and goodness, hides the true face of evil; unseen and invisible to all?
You might suggest that someone could be both a hero and a villain. Yet no one could sufficiently explain who is truly wicked among the humans this Earth bears.
But... are all of them truly humans? That is the key enquiry.
For the average person, none of this is true. They view it all as myths; stories spun for naïve minds longing to believe in something beyond their mundane reality. However, a connoisseur of the unnatural might argue that these unsuspecting, everyday humans are the true naïve ones, oblivious to what truly occurs in the world around them.
Every fairytale, every bedtime story, every legend about supernatural entities carries a sliver of truth. The danger that has gripped the hearts of the connoisseurs for millennia has always been present. Paralyzed by fear of the unknown, they dare not act to confront or fight against it.
In the beginning, there were only celestial beings. But after Lucifer’s banishment from Heaven, every angel who followed him lost their Divine Grace and turned into demons. These demons rose to claim Hell as their dominion. Since then, every sinful soul and fallen creature has become a part of Hell’s realm. After Lucifer’s imprisonment in Hell’s guarded prison, the throne was inherited by the very first Demons he created; Lilith and Alastair, the Queen and King of Hell.
Consumed by envy of Heaven’s creation of humankind, the demonic forces resolved to strengthen their power by creating subordinate creatures of their own. However, even then, the angels had already brought forth the first generation of supernatural beings. Witches were created first, and later, they were the ones responsible for originating the werewolf curse. Finally, they conjured the vampires. Over the aeons, other creatures arose to roam the Earth, bringing either chaos or peace.
Alongside this Mundane World, there was always another realm that coexisted in secret.
The Shadow World, as it is known, refers to the hidden and supernatural side of existence. It harbours creatures resembling their mundane counterparts yet far more extraordinary, whether due to their powers or their ancient origins, predating other beings by hundreds of years.
No one would have expected that, out of all the towns in Virginia, Mystic Falls would be the one to endure the influx of supernatural entities, spreading dread and fear through its peaceful community. Despite the corruption brought by such forces, redemption always seemed possible, delivered by celestial or mortal protectors who freed the town from impending catastrophes.
Among these protectors was a supernatural species whose existence, for over a thousand years, has brought light and safety wherever it was needed.
Shadowhunters are a secretive race of mundanes imbued with angelic blood. Despite their divine ancestry, Shadowhunters remain mortal and thus subject to ageing and death. Yet their angelic heritage grants them unique abilities, empowering them to achieve feats beyond human capability through the use of Angelic Runes.
Shadowhunters, also referred to as Nephilim, are often described as the ‘Children of Angels,’ being descendants of celestial beings. Their purpose was to defend Earth from demons and other malevolent metaphysical entities.
Raziel, the angel who created the Shadowhunters, shed his blood into the Mortal Cup — one of the Mortal Instruments — to give life to this half-celestial race. Their mission was to vanquish the most vicious and immortal of foes; the demons.
Demons are malicious, eternal beings that traverse worlds, leaving destruction in their wake. In religious contexts, they are described as the inhabitants of Hell and servants of the Devil. These demons exist in innumerable species and forms, their numbers said to be infinite.
However, the term ‘Demons’ does not solely define these creatures. It encompasses every malevolent essence, mortal or immortal, that seeks to bring harm to innocent lives.
But can such malevolent entities truly bring nothing but chaos to humanity? Could they, in some way, inspire change for the better? Conversely, could those deemed benevolent always ensure harmony and prosperity, or might they too bring fear and sorrow, whether intentionally or not?
Is there any evidence to confirm or deny these possibilities?
Only time will tell...
