The rainfall has begun.
He looked at the flooding streets and finally understood why HQ was perched atop of a cliff. The hut was safe, it was built on high ground, although the hole in the roof was still a nuisance. He was idly sipping tea in the tiny diner, listening to Chrome ranting about what a disaster his most recent mission was.
"Kassvin, this is not fair!" Nevra took him and a couple of other new recruits for a chaperone mission into the forest. Travellers have heard strange noises and saw weird looking footprints, a perfect opportunity for shadow guard trainees to practice their future profession.
Well, it was, until the misterious creature they were looking for turned out to be a keythrong. Tracking it down was not a task trainees should be doing.
"If he thinks it's too dangerous for you then it's too dangerous for you, period." He made bruscetta with tomato sauce, the kid munched on it as they spoke.
"But how am I going to gain any experience if he refuses to let me earn it?? That's just ridiculous!"
He sighed. "Listen, I really don't want to argue right now." He took a sip from the grey porcelain mug, gazing at the overcast sky with a tired expression.
"..." Chrome sulked. "Whatever."
"Indeed whatever. Do you like the bruscetta?"
The change of topic lightened the conversation right up, he was soon neck deep in praise.
They also talked about Huang Huas impending birthday celebrations, apparently it's an international holiday. The city of El will hold a festival for her.
"That's crazy, when will that be?"
"Towards the end of Junius. It's about a month and three weeks from now."
"June is winter here? How did I not know this until now? Nevermind, I have brain damage..." Chrome gave him a weird look then continued.
"Yeah, I guess. I'm really excited about the games tho."
Kassvins perked up. "Games?" The sunset festival games would be the perfect opportunuty for his tabedhar, but the Han Han birthday games will do too. He shall return the affection of his Baé'íík!!
"Yeah, theres gonna be mounted archery, that is Lady Huang Huas favourite sport, even though she never does it herself. And a dueling competition because the locals love beating the shit each other." He cracked up before catching himself.
"Watch your mouth! I'll tell on you, you rascal!" Kass said, still smiling.
"Well wahtever, I need to go do spear drills in half an hour tho."
"Well, get up and go do your spear drills in half an hour, then." Chrome had sensed that the archer might not be in the best mood the moment they greeted each other, but now it was painfuly obvious that he should have asked whats wrong.
"....." He sat quietly, sipping from his own mug of lukewarm tea. "You seem a little upset, is something wrong?"
Kassvin put his mug down, staring at the water pouring from the heavens. "It's been raining all day."
"Yeah, thats normal for this time of year. It's not going to stop until the end of winter."
"No snow?" He loves snow, it would be dissapointing if he had to live in a region where theres none.
"Sometimes it falls. Never seen it though." Chrome was from a faraway land, he hadn't been here for more than a few months so he never even had a chance to see it.
"Hmmh." The blavian took a sip of his drink. "It reminds me of a place that I've visited once. It bothers me that I can't recall the details." The smell of wet dirt, the heat on his cheeks when he went inside after being outside, the sound of water crashing down. It feels like the foundations of his whole being were missing because he can't remember what made him who he is. Or who he was. "I think it was my mother who took me there, but I can't see her face in my mind." He said, voice cracking as he said the last part.
