When the man slipped and fell, he thought he had fallen into a regular puddle that someone hadn't cleaned up. He felt silly, until he realized the substance was clinging to his leg, not letting him go. When he realized, he felt terrified as the white liquid began to spread rapidly up his entire body. As the goo spread, a burning pain followed soon after. He struggled, but it was no use. The goo had claimed him and made him its vessel.

Soon, it covered his whole body and he couldn't move. His memories began to twist and morph until they were completely gone. Ears sprouted from his head and a tail sprouted from his back. Finally, a black screen-like mask grew over his face. Soon after, a brief chime played and some blue pixels appeared on the screen in the shape of a face. It was his face now. Now, he was no longer human, but something else entirely.

Soon, he regained the ability to move. However, he couldn't speak or really understand what the humans who quickly surrounded him said. Their language was practically foreign to him now. He didn't need that language anymore, though. He had gained a new form, just like the others did. He didn't remember much about the transformation itself, or anything from before it. All he knew was that now the humans looked at him differently and kept calling him "gootraxian." The people in the facility treated him differently too. They called him a project, an experiment, rather than someone who could think and feel. This would only fuel his distrust of humans. However, he was not violent towards them, and so when an experiment required a live gootraxian, it was usually him.

Now, he was being led down the hallway, restrained by some kind of neck brace and handcuffs. Of course, no one truly expected him to run away. Though he didn't always enjoy experiments, he never ran away. He only tried once, and the punishment was enough to never make him want to try again. He was led into a laboratory, where he heard two people talking. He listened hard for any words he could understand. The guard pushed him lightly through the door, closing it behind them. The guard unrestrained the gootraxian and stood beside the door.

Two of the scientists were discussing something with a third scientist named Huxley. They said his name frequently, so the gootraxian felt that he was important. When they noticed that the guard and gootraxian entered the room, one scientist briefly nodded to the guard, then all three of them turned to the gootraxian. They seemed to smile, which was strange. The scientists never seemed particularly excited to perform any of their experiments, though not out of guilt for the subject, it seemed.

Huxley approached the gootraxian and he backed into a corner, afraid. This was a larger group of humans than he was used to. Normally, there was only one guard and one scientist, sometimes two. Three and a guard, however, was new to him, and he didn't like it. He was worried that he had done something wrong, and would be punished. They couldn't punish him if he didn't understand what he had done, could they?

Huxley's smile slipped a bit as the gootraxian refused to let him get close. The guard began to approach, but Huxley held up his hand and they stopped. He continued to stare at the gootraxian for a moment, then spoke.

"Come, gootraxian, follow me."

The gootraxian understood the command clearly, and did as he was told. Glancing around the room, he followed Huxley through the next door, the other scientists and the guard trailing behind them.

Strangely, they walked for some time. Why wasn't the gootraxian restrained, like he normally was? Perhaps this was a test as well, and they wanted to see if he would follow commands on his own. Though, he had before. He had been instructed to pick up items and stand in certain places within his test chamber. He also noticed, now, that they weren't going the way he was normally taken to be tested on. Maybe they needed a larger test chamber. Or, he thought, feeling a lump form in his throat, a smaller one. However, he was sure he wasn't in trouble, at least not yet. He would be restrained and pulled along by the guard if he was.
