The big, grey wolf, with his iconic fedora, leapt over the gap as he had done dozens of times before. Walking forward over the remaining half of the bridge, he walked through the door that no human had entered in months. He stumbled clumsily through the dark room, having no idea where he was headed. Somehow, he managed to find the exact hallway where his friend was waiting for him. At the end, he saw the ominous purple gleam of his goggles and the markings on his chest. Running and shouting like a child to greet his friend, he yelled out.
"Spy! I'm here! Just like you asked me to, I waited for the blackout and came right here. What did you want to show me, by the way?" He tilted his head slightly as he asked.
The lizard gootraxian was used to the wolf's antics and did not flinch when he yelled, instead turning his head to make eye contact with him. He stood up, rising to almost a foot over the wolf's head.
"Come with me, I'll explain when we get there." He said, walking down the corridor.
As they walked, Grey noticed the scars that covered his friend's entire body. Sure, he had seen most of them before, but Spy rarely moved much when they talked, and him taking Grey somewhere was entirely new, but he was too excited to ask questions. However, the scars did make him wonder just how long Spy had been alive. Surely, it wasn't true that he had really been alive long enough to witness the entire facility's collapse. In fact, the gootraxian who had initially caused the outbreak was killed as soon as it was spotted. The human population resonated with hatred towards cattes ever since then.
Grey continued observing the nightcrawler's scars. Each one seemed to vary in length and shape. Most of them looked like cuts, but it was obvious that some were from different weapons, like spiked bats or even hammers. It was incredible that one gootraxian had been through, and survived, so many fights. Though Spy had struck him as a very tactical gootraxian the moment Grey laid eyes on him, in the past, most nightcrawlers he had seen were... less intelligent.
Soon, they had reached the bridge, leapt over the collapsed portion, and Spy stopped at a shelf in the cave they were now in. Grey turned to look over the railings across the room from him, taking in the enormous opening. When he heard a light metal clanging from behind him, he turned to see Spy climbing up the side of the shelf, carefully balancing himself so as not to tip it over. Grey watched, assuming he was looking for something on top of the shelf, but Spy looked back down at him.
"Come up here, Grey," Spy told the wolf.
Grey looked confused, but did as he asked. Now, he was on top of the shelf next to Spy. Spy seemed to be searching for something, prodding at the wall for something.
"Spy, what-"
Grey began to ask what exactly his friend was doing, before a loud grinding from within the wall cut him off. Grey looked, and it seemed that a ladder was lowering from the ceiling above. Did anyone else know about this? The ladder didn't lower very far, though, and it stopped a few feet above their heads.
"You can make that jump, right Grey?" Spy asked him.
"I... yeah, of course I can!" Grey said pridefully, preparing to take the leap.
On his first attempt, he misjudged the distance and fell just short of the first rung, hitting the shelf and then rolling onto the floor like a ragdoll. Spy was silent, but Grey could practically feel him suppressing his laughter. Face hot, he tried again and succeeded, barely clinging on to the last rung. He held back a shout, afraid that he might fall again, but when he steadied himself he looked down at his friend, who nodded as if to encourage him to climb it. He did so, and about halfway up the ladder, he felt it shake as Spy began to climb up as well. The rusty ladder audibly groaned under the nightcrawler's weight, but held fast.
