CHAPTER 2: DANICA

NYSSA'S POV

I woke up not feeling refreshed but rather more tired. "Ano bang problema ng katawan ko" tanong ko, breathing heavily as if I run a mile.

"Ganito ba ang katawan ng isang 18 years old?" naguguluhan ko ding tanong bago tumagilid at muling ipikit ang mga mata ko.

"Matanda na kung matanda, at least kumpleto pahinga ko" and after saying that I quickly fell asleep... again.

Nang magising ako ay tanghali na kaya ininit ko na muna ang ulam na niluto ko kahapon at kumain na. At nang matapos ay tinapos ko na ang pagliligpit dito sa bahay at syempre humilata sa kama nang matapos.

"How are you?" tanong ni Daddy "your Mom is eating breakfast, have you eaten?"

"My back still hurts. I woke up at 7:30 then fell asleep again, then woke up again around 12:15" I answered before fixing my position.

"Is the pain bearable?" he asked. "If you feel extreme pain, go to a hospital"

"Opo..." sagot ko before hugging the teddy bear that I was hugging last night.

"Hello, Nyssa..." A smile immediately draw on my face when I heard my mother's voice.

"Mommy, are you okay na? I heard you fainted" I asked.

"I'm fine na, hija. How's your first night?" tanong niya. "Did you sleep well? How's your back? Your Dad told me you're experiencing pains—DO YOU NEED ME THERE, HIJA!" agad kong inilayo ang telepono sa tenga ko dahil sa pagsigaw ni Mommy.

"Cassandra, relax—WHAT DO YOU MEAN RELAX?! My baby probably needs me right now!"

"Ma! I'm fine, relax ka lang. The pain is bearable and I'm doing well" I assure her.

"Really?" she calmly asked. "You're doing well?"

"Yes. Yes, Ma...I am doing well. No need to worry" I answered.

After a long pause she started crying. "Ma..."

"My baby...my baby is okay without me" napabuntong hininga ako nang humagulgol na ito.

"I'll put the phone down now, byeeee" sabi ko bago patayin ang tawag at itabi na muna ang cellphone ko sa side table.

Nang saktong 4:00 na ay tumayo na ko para maligo, naisipan kong libutin ang village kung nasaan ako para naman alam ko ang pasikot-sikot sa lugar.

I wore a plain white jacket and cycling shorts paired with the rubber shoes I wore when I left Spain before locking the house and going outside for a walk. Malamig ang simoy ng hangin at nakangiti ako habang pinagmamasdan ang palubog ng araw.

Nahinto ako sa paglalakad nang mag-vibrate ang cellphone ko kaya agad ko itong kinuha at binasa ang text ni Daddy;

Papa: Where are you? I saw the CCTV from outside the house and

I saw you went out

Nyssa: Just go for a walk to familiarize

myself with the place

Papa: Oh! Take care. Go home before it gets dark.'Kay?

Nysa: Opo

Nang maibulsa ko na ulit ang cellphone ko ay bumalik na ako sa paglalakad, pero sa kalagitnaan ay nahinto ako nang may makitang naiyak na bulto sa labas ng isang bahay. I immediately approach her to ask what's wrong.
